Do They Know It's Christmas?
Band Aid (Bono & Adam Clayton) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Endlich wieder Weihnachtszeit
Die Nerven liegen so schön blank
Egal ob's regnet oder schneit
Treffen uns am Glühweinstand
Wir vergessen uns're Nächsten nicht
Kaufen all die Läden leer
In allen 54 Ländern
Doch immer nur dieselben Bilder, gelbe Schutzanzüge auf all den Sendern
Du gehst durch den Dezember
Mit einem Lied im Ohr

Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Wir feiern uns're Feste
Doch wir sehen nicht wie sie fallen
Der Tod kennt keine Feiertage
Und schon ein Kuss kann tödlich sein
Kein Abschied und keine Umarmung
Jeder stirbt für sich allein

Do they know it's Christmas time at all?
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Und auf all den Feiern
Von hier bis nach Monrovia
Denken wir daran, in dieser stillen Nacht

Do they know it's Christmas time at all?
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?
Do they know it's Christmas time?

Heal the world
Ooh, ooh, oh oh yeah
Heal the world
Ooh, ooh
Feel the world
Let them know it's Christmas time
Feel the world
Let them know it's Christmas time
We're the world
Do we know it's Christmas time at all?

We're the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Do They Know It's Christmas" by the duo of Bono and Adam Clayton, (which is actually a remix of the 1984 Band Aid song of the same name) are a commentary on the stark differences between the way Christmas is celebrated in developed countries versus in underdeveloped countries. The first verse talks about the festive spirit that sets in during Christmas time, with people gathering at Glühweinstand (mulled wine stands) and buying all kinds of things from the stores to the point of exhausting the entire stock. The contrast to this picture is painted in the following verses which highlight the grim reality in underdeveloped countries - the lack of medical facilities resulting in widespread pain and misery, children painting their dreams on walls because they don't have anything else, and the same repetitive images of diseases and suffering are blasted on TV screens.

The lyrics then go on to discuss the fact that death and disease don't take a holiday and can affect anyone at any time. There is no sense of community and warmth as people die alone, and the festive season seems hollow and meaningless to them. The lyrics take a hopeful turn at the end, calling on people to heal the world and make it a better place for everyone.
