Band of Horses was formed by Ben Bridwell (guitar, vocals) and Mat Brooke (guitar) in 2004 after the break-up of their previous band, Carissa's Wierd. Rob and Creighton were formerly of the mathrock band The New Mexicans before joining Band of Horses. The group initially got attention from Sub Pop records after opening for Iron & Wine in Seattle area shows. In 2005, the band released their debut EP, Band of Horses Tour EP, which was sold exclusively at shows and on Sub Pop's website. Their debut full-length, Everything All the Time was recorded in 2005 with producer Phil Ek and released on March 21, 2006 to generally good reviews.
On July 13, 2006, Band of Horses appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman sans Brooke. As of July 25, 2006, Mat Brooke left Band of Horses to focus more on his other band, Grand Archives, who had also signed to Sub Pop.

La, la la la la, la la la
Life on earth is changing
Life on earth is ending
And time on earth is ending
And time on earth is changing
La, la la la la, la la la
Life on earth is ending
Life on earth is changing
And time on earth is changing
And time on earth is ending
La, la la la la, la la la
La, la la la la, la la la
La, la la la la, la la la
The opening lines of Band of Horses's song "Life on Earth" set the tone for a somber message - one that reflects on the impermanence of life and the world around us. The repetition of the "La, la la la la" phrase is a hypnotic and reflective prelude to the lyrics to come. From the outset, the listener is primed to contemplate the sentiment of the song.
The lyrics of the song speak to change, the end of things, and the passage of time. The repeated phrases "Life on earth is changing" and "life on earth is ending" are a bold statement on the fragility of our existence. This theme is deepened with the lyrics "And time on earth is changing" and "And time on earth is ending." Band of Horses seems to be reminding us that time is our most precious resource, and it is always fleeting.
Overall, "Life on Earth" is a poignant reminder to appreciate the world and life we have before it inevitably disappears or changes. The song suggests that our ability to live fully and appreciate what we have in the present is what truly makes life worth living.

Reminds you of those late study nights in high schools. Your great adventures with friends when times were more simple. Locked you into stargazing hammoking, laughing, crying, and all the other wonderful emotions. God I wish I could have it all back. I fell asleep with a girl in my arms stroking her hair listening to this in the background. Purest sound i ever heard was the tide of her breathing mixed with this song.
