On My Way Back Home
Band of Horses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On my way back home, by chance I thought of
All my favorite songs, where I'd gone wrong
The only words that I could think of
I'm pissing my life away in the form of a song
On my way back home

Every step, a victory it was
I was cheating death, just in time I woke
My memories start to wander off
Come to me, the remembrance of
On my way back home

I came in this way and here now I'll stay
If the unknown have to wait one more day
There's often times that it comes out wrong

But luckily I, I got a mind to know
On my way back home

Overall Meaning

The song "On My Way Back Home" by Band of Horses is a reflective and introspective song that deals with themes of regret and self-discovery. The song begins with the singer thinking about their favorite songs and how they had gone wrong. The lyrics "I'm pissing my life away in the form of a song" show the singer's realization that they may have wasted their life pursuing music instead of something else. However, this does not stop the singer from continuing their journey back home.

As the song progresses, the singer takes every step as a victory, almost like they have cheated death. They then start to remember their memories and the things that have led them to where they are today. The line "Come to me, the remembrance of" suggests that the memories are not all good, but they are important for the singer's growth and self-discovery. Finally, the song ends with the singer embracing their journey and deciding to stay on this path as they have "a mind to know."

Overall, this song is about taking a step back to reflect on life and realizing that everything that has happened, good or bad, has led to their current situation. It's a reminder that even though things may not always go as planned, they can still take pride in the journey.

This song inspires such sweet feelings for those of us on the road. Coming home ... wherever my wife, daughter and brothers are waiting.
