Drowning
Banks ( The Ninetys Remix ) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You tried to lie, I can see that you don't need me
(That you don't need me, that you don't need me)
All of your words, they have been cursed with dishonesty
(With dishonesty, with dishonesty)

Take it from the girl you claimed to love
You gonna get some bad karma
I'm the one who had to learn to build a heart made of armor
From the girl who made you soup and tied your shoes when you were hurting
You are not deserving, you are not deserving

I can see that you wanted me cold
You're so bold, why you're watching me moan?

You tried to hide, I can see that you don't see me
(that you don't see me, that you don't see me)
What do you gain by the names that you're calling me
(That you're calling me, that you're calling me)

Take it from the girl you claimed to love
You gonna get some bad karma
I'm the one who had to learn to build a heart made of armor
From the girl who made you soup and tied your shoes when you were hurting
You are not deserving, you are not deserving

('Cause I'm drowning for ya)
I can see that you wanting me cold
You're so bold, why you're watching me moan?

Holding it up
Like you can pull me down
'Cause I'm drowning for ya
('Cause I'm drowning for ya)
'Cause I'm drowning for ya

Can you follow me up to the water?
You can show me the sinking deeper
Let me know
'Cause I'm drowning for ya
Can you follow me up to the water?
You can show me the sinking deeper
Let me know
'Cause I'm drowning for ya
Can you follow me up to the water?
You can show me the sinking deeper
Let me know
'Cause I'm drowning for ya
Can you follow me up to the water?
You can show me the sinking deeper
Let me know
'Cause I'm drowning for ya

('Cause I'm drowning for ya)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Banks' song "Drowning" discuss a toxic and dishonest relationship. The first verse speaks to the singer's awareness that the other person is lying about not needing them. The second verse goes on to mention dishonesty in their words and the names they're calling the singer. The chorus talks about how the other person will face karma for their actions and how the singer had to learn to build emotional armor. The bridge and repeated "Can you follow me up to the water?" lines suggest that the singer is willing to continue drowning in this relationship despite being mistreated.

The lyrics to "Drowning" showcase a relationship that is both desperate and harmful. The singer clearly cares for the other person, even though they acknowledge that they're being treated poorly. Interestingly, the lyrics also suggest that the other person is aware of the singer's strong feelings and is either taking advantage of them or trying to drown them emotionally. The refrain of "Can you follow me up to the water?" reinforces this idea, as it implies that the other person isn't necessarily interested in saving the singer so much as they are in watching them struggle.

The production on all of her songs is fucking quality.

@CatsCoffeeGuitars

I was just talking to a friend how her songs are perfectly mixed/mastered, there's so much dynamics but enough compression to make it feel natural. Really one of the few pop artists that I truly enjoy listening, composition and production wise. ^^

@Platinum400

Cats, Coffee & Guitars It's interesting even the shit being played on radio stations doesn't sound this rich and clear.

I don't know if I'm neat picking too much, but most of the moder records sound really bad :/. Composition wise they may be strong and interesting but production tends to be boring and not uplifting at all, especially the stuff that's being played on the radio stations. I'm more into metal/rock music but the same thing is present there. I can't count how many records I've really enjoyed composition wise but then the record just made it bleh and it lacked that boom effect.
Althouuugh Goddess by BANKS seems to have the right mix/master ratio that makes it really enjoyable to listen to, of course there are many other pop artists I do tend to come across that have that same aspect of production. You can really feel the songs breathe, move with the tempo and that manipulation of the dynamics is present, which makes the record great. Looking forward to seeing what she has next for us! ^^

Dude, listen to SOHNs album, he had a hand in the production of Banks' record. It's really good and has quite a similar sound.

@CatsCoffeeGuitars

***** thanks for the recommendation! ^^
