December, 1967: My grade-school (6th Grade) class and our teachers went to a local roller-skating rink for a pre-Christmas party.

Instead of organ music, the rink played uptempo rock and soul records.

When the rink played the Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Incense and Peppermints", I (a klutz on skates) went off to the side, took off my skates, and began dancing. One other boy (and three or four girls) had done the same thing.

The next record they played was this one ("Soulfinger"), which kept me dancing!

Probably the happiest five minutes of dancing I had as a child.

My dad was an accomplished trumpet player and loved this song. Whenever he heard it he’d go through the finger motions of playing it. We lost him in 2013 when he was just 61 years old. This track always makes me think of him and what an amazing man and father he was. 😊

For the original Bar-Kays their moment in the spotlight was brief---a little more than five months. They sound like they're having a lot of fun doing this record and everyone joining in on the chorus. Still loving this one over 55 years later. Good music never dies even when we've lost those who played it.
Two members survived. James Alexander was not on the plane and Ben Cauley who plays the trumpet here somehow survived the crash.

In an interview, David Porter who co-produced it with Isaac Hayes said that there were kids hanging outside the building that were full of life as he and Hayes were working on the song with the band. So with a payment of free coke bottles, he got them to come in and made good use of their energy on the song. I've always loved that story.

This song takes me back to the summer of 1967. It was the 4th of July the weather was perfect, the sky was bright & sunning and no clouds to be found!! My big Brother Michael was our leadoff man that day, he had joined the Boy Scouts and his fellow Scout members came by to pick him up because they were given the assignment to raise the flag at St. James Cathedral Church, and they were all dressed in thier scout uniforms and lookin' sharp!! Later that day our family had a picnic at a local park, my Mom really out did herself, she prepared a lot of food ect...she also had my 4 siblings and I dressed in red, white and blue, that's ALL AMERICAN and it doesn't get any better than that ! Both my Mom and my big brother went home to rest in the Bosom of Abraham......Thank you Mom and Michael for the memories.

55 years ago today (2/23/1967) my band "The Elements of Sound" played for my school's auditorium (JHS 60 in NYC). Soul Finger was our 2nd song, & it got everyone rockin' & swayin' - even the teachers . We loved playing this jammie - & I love coming back every year to groove on it & play along on YT with my bass ( back in 67, I was lead guitar). Song still ROCKS !

In the UK 1970's this was used by Scottish DJ Stuart Henry to open his Saturday morning radio show. IIRC, it was sometimes preceded by what sounded like the Scots Guards band marching off with bagpipes and drums full blast. Much missed.

I love the story of how this was recorded: A bunch of Memphis kids who had been hanging around outside the Stax studio at East McLemore Avenue (which also had a record shop) were brought inside, gathered around a mike or two, and told to sing along with the instrumental-only playback of this song that none of them (or anyone else) had heard before. You can hear they don't quite know what to do other than shout "Soul Finger," whatever that means, on cue, but they get into it & have fun so that more than 50 years on you can too!
