Mason initially focused on songwriting when she entered the music industry in her teens. As a performer, though, she had a major hit single with her third release in 1965, "Yes, I'm Ready" (#5 pop, #2 R&B). She had modest success throughout the rest of the decade on the small Arctic label, run by her manager, top Philadelphia disc-jockey, Jimmy Bishop. She reached the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 again in 1965 with "Sad, Sad Girl", and "Oh How It Hurts" in 1967. A two-year stay with National General Records, run by a film production company, produced one album and four singles which failed to find success.[citation needed]
In the 1970s, Mason signed to Buddah Records and toughened her persona, singing about sexual love and infidelity with an uncommon frankness at the time in songs like "Bed and Board", "From His Woman to You", and "Shackin' Up" and would interrupt her singing to deliver straight-talking 'raps' about romance. She also continued to write some of her new material. Curtis Mayfield produced her on a cover version of Mayfield's own "Give Me Your Love", which restored her to the pop Top 40 and R&B Top Ten in 1973; "From His Woman to You" (the response to Shirley Brown's single "Woman to Woman") and "Shackin' Up", produced by former Stax producer Don Davis in Detroit were also solid soul sellers in the mid-1970s.
Mason also sang vocals on the tracks "Sheba Baby," "I'm In Love With You," "A Good Man Is Gone," and "She Did It" on the soundtrack for the 1975 Pam Grier film, Sheba, Baby.[2]
After leaving Buddah Records in 1975 after two top ten R&B hits, she only dented the charts periodically on small labels. They included "I Am Your Woman, She Is Your Wife", which was produced in 1978 by Weldon McDougal who had produced her first major success, "Yes I'm Ready", and later in 1984, "Another Man" on West End Records.
Mason started to concentrate on running her own publishing company in the late 1980s, but continues to perform occasionally. She released a new CD, Feeling Blue, in September 2007. Mason was still performing to sold-out audiences in 2016. Her most recent show was at the Terrance Theater in Long Beach, California. Mason was inducted into the Soul Music Hall of Fame on March 1, 2016.

She's got the papers and I've got the man
But the man that she had, that I took from her
Is not the manchild that we thought he was at all
Caught in the middle I don't know what to do
What can you do when your man is untrue
There's another man oh baby
He looked very normal till I opened my eyes
The man I loved and married loves another guy
There's another man (Another man) in my life
Oh in my life
Oh ah
Another man is beating my time (Another man is beating my time)
Another man is lovin mine (Another man is lovin mine)
Another man is beating my time (Another man)
Another man is lovin mine (Another man is lovin mine)
(Another man is beating my time) I'm going crazy
(Another man is lovin mine) Crazy
(Another man is beating my time) Going crazy
(Another man is lovin mine)
You know you and I were together
I was so in love with you
But there was a little bit
Too much sugar and you were little too sweet
But then was a little bit
Too much sugar and you were too sweet
I think I wanna stay but I don't know if I can
Loving like I do and sharing with the man
There's another man (Another man)
In my live (in my life)
Oh I think I want to leave
But I can't swallow my pride
My midnight lover loves another guy
There's another man (Another man) in my life
In my life
Oh ah
Another man is beating my time (Another man is beating my time)
Another man is lovin mine (Another man is lovin mine)
Another man is beating my time (Another man is beating my time)
Another man is lovin mine (Another man is lovin mine)
(Another man is beating my time)
(Another man is lovin mine)
(Another man is beating my time)
(Another man is lovin mine)
You know I started notice
A definite strangeness
There was no sameness
He was changing
I had gone out one day and bought me a very, very sexy dress
And opened up my closet and it had dissapeared
Lord I hope the man is not wearing my
Oooh child
And I also pick up other little things
Like you and I making love the other night
I thought he was calling out my name
But it evidently it was not my name
And I passed him on the steps one day
And he was switching more than I was
And I even caught him holding hands
Walking right down market street
We all know what market street is
He was so desirable
And this's gonna be such a waste
You know when you think everything is in place
And what you think you have is not what you really have at all
Because in my case what I thought I had was not a entire whole man
But a facsimile there of (ohh)
Wasn't the clothing or nothin', you know, I'm not
There was a certain kind of a way that he talked to me
His voice went up
You know, at first he was talking like, YEAH BABY
Then he went hello
And it kept going up and down
And there must have been, I figured, a defect
Of not when he was created
But somewhere down the line
Something went wrong
(Another man is beating my time)
(Another man is lovin mine)
(Another man is beating my time)
(Another man is lovin mine)
Another man is beating my time (Another man is beating my time)
Another man is lovin mine (Another man is lovin mine)
Another man is beating my time (Another man is beating my time)
Another man is lovin mine (Another man is lovin mine)
The lyrics to Barbara Mason's Another Man talk about a woman who is caught in a love triangle. She thought she had the man of her dreams, but as time passes, she discovers that he is seeing another man. She is heartbroken and cannot decide what to do: stay with him or leave him. She feels like another man is beating her time and loving what is supposed to be hers. The chorus repeats this message. The woman expresses her confusion and frustration with the situation, as she thought she had everything in place but is now realizing that what she thought she had is not what she really had at all. She is feeling helpless and going crazy because of the situation.

I was so in love with you
But there was a little bit
Too much sugar and you were little too sweet
But then was a little bit
Too much sugar and you were too sweet
You and I were a pair, you know
I loved you so much
However, there was a slight problem
You were a bit too perfect, a little too sweet
And actually, it was a bit too excessive
I think I wanna stay but I don't know if I can
Loving like I do and sharing with the man
I want to stick around, yeah
But I don't know if I can
Loving as I do and sharing with my male partner
There's another man (Another man)
In my live (in my life)
Oh I think I want to leave
But I can't swallow my pride
My midnight lover loves another guy
There's another man (Another man) beside me
In my life, oh
I want to go, but I can't bury my ego
My partner is now in love with another man
You know I started notice
A definite strangeness
There was no sameness
He was changing
You know, I began to observe
Something strange
He was behaving differently, and there was a lack of familiarity
I had gone out one day and bought me a very, very sexy dress
And opened up my closet and it had disappeared
Lord I hope the man is not wearing my
Ooh child
One day I went shopping and bought myself a sexy dress
Later, I opened my closet, and it was gone
Dear God, I hope my partner isn't wearing it
Ooh child
And I also pick up other little things
Like you and I making love the other night
I thought he was calling out my name
But it evidently it was not my name
I noticed several other small things too
Like when we made love the other night
I thought he was calling me by name
But it seems that it was someone else's name
And I passed him on the steps one day
And he was switching more than I was
And I even caught him holding hands
Walking right down market street
We all know what market street is
He was so desirable
And this's gonna be such a waste
One day I crossed paths with him on the stairs
And he was acting more erratic than I was
I even saw him holding another person's hand
Walking down Market Street
We're all familiar with Market Street
He was so desirable
And it's going to end up being such a waste
You know when you think everything is in place
And what you think you have is not what you really have at all
Because in my case what I thought I had was not a entire whole man
But a facsimile there of (ohh)
Wasn't the clothing or nothin', you know, I'm not
There was a certain kind of a way that he talked to me
His voice went up
You know, at first he was talking like, YEAH BABY
Then he went hello
And it kept going up and down
And there must have been, I figured, a defect
Of not when he was created
But somewhere down the line
Something went wrong
You know how it is when you believe you have everything in order
And what you believe you have isn't actually what you have
Because, in my situation, what I believed I had was not an entire man
But a replica of him (ohh)
It wasn't about his clothing or anything like that, you see
There was a certain manner in which he spoke to me
His voice changed
At first, he spoke like a normal person, then he said, 'hello'
And it continued to fluctuate
I realized there must have been an abnormality
Not when he was born, but at some point
Something went wrong
