Barbra
Barbra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That babies come in bottles
But last week she said
They grew on special babies bushes
I don't believe in the storks either
They're all in the zoo
Busy with their own babies
And what's a baby bush anyway?
The lyrics of My Name Is Barbra by Barbra Streisand express her childhood confusion and disbelief regarding the mythological story of storks delivering babies to expecting parents. Streisand mocks the idea that a baby can be grown on a special baby bush or delivered by storks, considering them as unworthy of her belief. In her cynical tone, she also mentions how her mother had earlier misled her by telling her that babies came in bottles, perhaps indicating the confusion and information overload a child experiences.
The lines "My name is Barbra" at the end of the verse stand out as a declaration of identity, power, and pride. It sounds like Streisand is stating who she is and nothing will make her believe something just because someone else said so.
Throughout the song, Streisand's lyrics touch upon the idea of identity, exploring the different personalities and characters she can play, through different styles of music, to find her unique self. She also mentions that "whatever my name is, I'm not just one mood," reinforcing the idea that she's multifaceted, and her creativity can't be confined to a single expression.

My mother said
My parental figure expressed to me
That babies come in bottles
That infants are bought in stores
But last week she said
However, recently she contradicted herself by stating
They grew on special babies bushes
That offspring grow on specific plants
I don't believe in the storks either
I do not accept the idea that birds deliver babies
They're all in the zoo
They exist solely in captivity
Busy with their own babies
Engaged in raising their own young
And what's a baby bush anyway?
Moreover, the existence of infant plants is preposterous
My name is Barbra
I am introducing myself as Barbra

Celine Dion is a fabulous singer (she was 29 years old when this song was first recorded in 1997), but Barbra is immortal. The richness in Barbra's voice is unmatched by any female singer in the last 100 years at least. And she was already past her prime here at 55; nearly TWICE Celine's age. Simply astounding.
