Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
A Good Man Is Hard To Find / Some Of These Days
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You always get the other kind
Just when you think that he is your pal
You look for him and find him
Fooling 'round some other girl
Then you rave
You even pray to see him
Laying in his grave
Take my advice
And hug him in the morning
Kiss him every night
Give him plenty lovin'
Treat him right
'Cause a good man nowadays
Is hard to find
You know girls
As you play the game of love
You put your heart on the spin of the dice
And when the dealer turns up the Jack of spades
Let the chips fall where they may
You pay the price
Yes girls
But a woman's gotta keep in mind
Even if she's the queen of hearts
He may discard her
And though the next good man is mighty hard to find
Remember girls?
A good woman is even harder!
Some of these days
You'll miss me honey
Some of these days
You're gonna feel so lonely
You'll miss my huggin'
You'll miss my kissin'
You'll miss me honey
When you go away
I feel so lonely
For you only
And you know honey
That you had your way
So when you leave me
You know it will grieve me
You'll miss your red, hot mama
Some of these days
You'll miss my huggin' in the morning
Kissin' at night
You're never gonna find no other girl
Who can treat you so right
You'll miss your mama, papa,
Some of these days
The lyrics to Barbra Streisand's song "A Good Man Is Hard to Find / Some of These Days" explore the complexities and frustrations of relationships. The first verse discusses the difficulty of finding a faithful and loyal man. It reflects the disappointment and heartbreak that can come when someone you think is trustworthy turns out to be unfaithful. The singer expresses her anger and frustration, even going as far as wishing to see him dead. However, she also offers advice to those who have found a good man, encouraging them to cherish and appreciate him because finding such a man is not easy.
The second verse shifts the perspective to women in relationships, comparing love to a game where you take risks with your heart. The dealer turning up the Jack of spades symbolizes the unexpected betrayal or rejection that can occur. The lyrics suggest that even if a woman is confident and powerful (the "queen of hearts"), she may still experience heartbreak when a good man leaves her. The verse reminds listeners that finding a good woman can be equally challenging.
The chorus, "Some of these days, you'll miss me honey / Some of these days, you're gonna feel so lonely," conveys a sense of longing and regret. It suggests that despite the difficulties, the singer knows that her presence will be missed and her love will be remembered. The final lines reiterate the uniqueness of her love, stating that no other girl will be able to treat the person as right as she did.
Overall, the song is a reflection on the hardships and complexities of romantic relationships, particularly the challenge of finding someone trustworthy and the pain that comes with their absence.
