Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
A Time For Love
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
For hummingbirds and butterflies
For tender words that harmonize with love
A time for climbing hills
For leaning out of windowsills
Admiring daffodils above
A time for rainbow colored weather
A time of make believe that we've been dreaming of
As time goes drifting by
The willow bends and so do I
But all my friends whatever skies above
I know a time for spring
A time for fall
But best of all
A time for love
A time for holding hands together
A time for rainbow colored weather
A time of make believe that we've been dreaming of
As time goes drifting by
The willow bends and so do I
But all my friends whatever skies above
I know a time for spring
A time for fall
But best of all
A time for love
The lyrics to Barbra Streisand's "A Time For Love" describe the various seasons and moments of life that call for love and connection. The first verse paints a picture of summer with its blue skies, colorful hummingbirds, and delicate butterflies, calling for tender words that reflect the beauty of these natural elements. The second verse mentions climbing hills and admiring daffodils from windowsills, articulating a sense of wonder and contemplation that can be felt in the presence of nature.
The chorus then brings focus to the importance of holding hands and experiencing the world through a lens of love, with its metaphor of rainbow-colored weather and make-believe dreams. The third verse acknowledges the passage of time and the way in which life can bend and change like a willow tree, but assures listeners that through all of life's seasons, there is a time for love. The final repetition of the chorus, with its emphasis on the best time of all being "a time for love," reinforces the idea that moments of connection and affection are what make life truly meaningful.
Overall, "A Time For Love" is a celebration of the beauty of nature and the power of love to give meaning to our experiences, no matter what curveballs life may throw our way.

One of my favorite all time songs. This one belongs to Tony Bennett--my favorite Bennett song. Barbra in a lovely performance here.

As much as I love both Tony and Barbra, no one does justice to this song like Shirley Horn in my opinion.
