Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
As Time Goes By
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A kiss is still a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by
And when two lovers woo
They still say "I love you"
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by
Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate
Woman needs man, and man must have his mate
There's no one can deny
It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by
The first verse of the song, "You must remember this, a kiss is just a kiss. A sigh is just a sigh. The fundamental things apply, as time goes by," is a reflection of the fact that some things never change, regardless of the passing of time. Even though things might change, love remains the same. This verse can be interpreted as a reminder to those who believe that love changes with time.
The second verse, "And when two lovers woo, they still say 'I love you.' On that you can rely, no matter what the future brings, as time goes by," is a testament to the fact that some things never change, and that love remains constant even as time passes. The phrase "as time goes by" is repeated throughout the song to emphasize the idea that some things are constant, while others are fleeting. The theme of love is the focus of the song and is depicted as timeless, always constant even in a world that is constantly changing.
The third verse speaks to the enduring nature of love and how it transcends time. The imagery evoked in the verse, with references to moonlight, love songs, passion, jealousy, and hate, is timeless, and these things remain relevant regardless of the decade or century we are living in. The final verse of the song is a reminder that love is worth fighting for, even if it means risking everything, for the possibility of love is worth more than anything else. Finally, the phrase "the world will always welcome lovers as time goes by," is a reminder that love is universal and eternal.
