Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
Baby Me Baby
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Packing up and fixing to go
For some little reason that I can't remember
And this leavin' is a grievin' me so,
But just one little kiss could put
All of this leavin' behind,
Yeah, baby me Baby and
Maybe I might change my mind
Baby me Baby and
Make all my blues go away
Baby me Baby everyday
Baby me Baby and
I'll baby you the same way.
Sometimes the times are good times and
Sometimes the times
Are not quite so good as the good times should be
And that's when leavin' starts to enter my mind
But just one word from you and
I'll put all of my suitcases down
Yeah, baby me Baby and
Maybe I might stick around.
Baby me Baby everyday
Baby me Baby and
Make all my blues go away
Baby me Baby everyday
Baby me Baby and
I'll baby you the same way.
These lyrics present a story of someone who is about to leave, but doesn't quite understand why they have to do so. They are packing up their things, feeling the weight of sadness due to their impending departure. However, they are also hopeful that they might be persuaded to stay. The singer asks for a kiss, a small gesture that could change everything and halt the plan to leave. The phrase 'baby me baby' is repeated several times as a plea for tenderness and affection to help ease the pain of leaving.
The lyrics are evocative of the complexity of human emotions and how even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact. The singer expresses the idea that even though times may not always be good, there is hope that things can be better. The phrase 'baby me baby' is a call to be nurtured and cared for, a reminder that we all need a little bit of tender love and care to help us through difficult times.
Overall, the song's lyrics are a powerful testament to the transformative power of human connection, and the importance of reciprocal love and care in our daily lives.
