Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
Cryin

I can see that far away look in your eyes
I can tell by the way you hold me darlin' oooh
That it won't be long before it's cryin' time
Now they say that absence makes the heart grow fonder (fonder)
And that tears are only rain to make love grow
Well my love for you could never grow no stronger (stronger)
Oh, it's cryin' time again, you're gonna leave me
I can see that far away look in your eyes
I can tell by the way you hold me darlin'. Yeah now
That it won't be long before it's cryin' time
Now you say you've found someone that you love better (better)
That's the way it's happened every time before
And as sure as the sun comes up tomorrow ('morrow)
Cryin' time will start when you walk out the door
Oh, it's cryin' time again, you're gonna leave me
I can see that far away look in your eyes
I can tell by the way you hold me darlin'. Alright now
That it won't be long before it's cryin' time
(That it won't be long before it's cryin' time)
The lyrics to "Cryin Time" tell a story of heartbreak and impending loss. The singer knows that their partner is about to leave them and can see it in their distant gaze and the way they hold them. The singer reflects on the old adage that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but for them, this love could not be any stronger, even if they lived to be a hundred years old. They know that their partner has found someone else before and that it's only a matter of time before they leave again, causing them to begin crying once more.
This song paints a picture of someone who has been through this heartbreak before and knows that it's inevitable. It's a sad and emotional tune that speaks to anyone who has experienced the loss of love. The repetition of the chorus, "it's cryin time again," drives home the idea that this isn't the first time and won't be the last.
Aside from the emotional lyrics, "Cryin Time" is also known for its beautiful duet between Barbra Streisand and Ray Charles. The two lend their voices to create a harmonious duet that perfectly captures the emotion of the song. The instrumentation is mellow, featuring a string section, piano, and drums, which allows the focus to stay on the lyrics and the vocal performance.
