It Had To Be You
Barbra Streisand Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seems like dreams like I always had
Could be, should be, making me glad
Why am I blue?
It's up to you to explain

I'm thinking maybe, baby, I'll go away
Someday, some way, you'll come and say
It's you I need
And you'll be pleading in vain

It had to be you
Just had to be you

I wandered around
Finally found somebody who
Could make me be true
Or could make me be blue
Or even be glad just to be sad
Thinking of you

Some others I've seen
Some others I've seen
Might never be mean, might never be mean
Might never be cross, oh I tried to be boss
But they wouldn't do, but they wouldn't do
For nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your faults I love you still
It had to be you
Marvellous you
It had to be you

Alright let's go
Okay

It had to be you
Well some colour fades
It had to be you
I just had to wait

We wandered around
And finally found somebody who, somebody new
For nobody else gave me a thrill
With all your Soul hits, Barbra I love your skin
Aww it had to be you
Wonderful you
It had to be you

Just me and you
No one but you
It had to be you
Had to be you

It had to be, you

Overall Meaning

The song "It's Up To You" by Barbra Streisand is a love ballad that speaks about the mixed emotions of the singer regarding her relationship with her lover. In the first verse, the singer talks about how her dreams should make her happy but she's feeling blue and asks her lover to explain why. The second verse hints at the possibility of the singer leaving her lover and suggests that the lover will regret not expressing their love in time. The main theme of the song, however, is the sentiment that "it had to be you", a concept that is repeated throughout the song in various forms.

The singer goes on to describe how she has seen other people but none of them were able to make her feel the way her lover does. She explains how this person, with all their faults and imperfections, is the only one who can give her the thrill she desires. The chorus repeats the lyrics that "it had to be you" and emphasizes the fact that the singer is grateful and happy to be with her lover. The song ends on a cheerful note by highlighting that the singer and her lover are a perfect match and are meant to be together.

Overall, the song expresses the complex emotions of love and gratitude, emphasizing that sometimes love can be bittersweet, but the right person will make everything worthwhile.

So she was only 20 when u first heard her? Thats so cool.

How was life back then and where are u from?

Im from holland. And turning 33 in jan.

I grew up listening to what my parents mostly my dad but mom too listened too.
Streisand woman in love was one.
Others ofcourse beatles beach boys mamas and the papas.
I think my dad stopped a bit like around 89 to new music. Some that comes out now. But my mom keeps more up with the times and likes music i introduced.

Music was always big part of our house before they seperared when i was 18.

I now 3 yrs ago started to sing. Which i love but really cant. Lol. But now im to ill to go to lessons. Chronic ill. Crohn. Chronic pain morfine. Braintumor benign. Pressing against hypofyse.
Year in bed now. Had 3 surgeries to get me a permanent iv in my chest its a box going under my skin to bigger vein.
I need IV meds every 4 weeks. And for every mri ct scan. Narcose
Or Antibiotics IV or painkillers during that.

So now im in bed listening to music again 🎵

Another incredible Barbra talent... Singer, actress, songwriter, dancer. There is nothing she cannot do.

It is remarkable how good she still sounds. It is not just her great voice it is also the amount of emotion she puts into her singing. She is very emotionally expressive and that ain't no BS. They brought out the best in each other.

Great version! I sing this one myself in nursing homes. No matter how demented the residents are, they still know all of the words and sing along with me. The power of music is really incredible.
