Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
My Melancholy Baby
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Try and believe
Life is always sunshine when the heart beats true
Banish your fears
Smile through your tears
When you're sad, it makes me feel the same as you
Come to me my melancholy baby
All your fears are foolish fancy, maybe
You know, dear, that I'm in love with you
Every cloud must have a silver lining
Wait until the sun shines through
Come on and smile, my honey dear
While I kiss away each tear
Or else I shall be melancholy too
In the first verse of My Melancholy Baby by Barbra Streisand, the lyrics are conveying a message of hope and encouragement. The singer is asking her loved one why they are grieving and then implores them to try and believe that life is always sunshine when the heart is true. The second line suggests that if we remain true to ourselves and our emotions, life will always be filled with light and beauty. The third line of the verse advises the listener to banish their fears and continue to smile even through their tears. The final line of the verse is particularly poignant, as the singer tells her loved one that their sadness makes her feel the same way. In essence, the verse is saying that we are never truly alone in our pain and that someone will always be there to help us through it.
The chorus presents a particularly heartwarming message. Streisand invites the melancholy baby to come to her and be comforted. She promises to cuddle them and to help alleviate their fears. The second line of the chorus, "All your fears are foolish fancy, maybe," is particularly powerful, as it suggests that many of our fears are simply illusions or misunderstandings. Streisand is telling her loved one not to worry, assuring them that she is in love with them and wants to help them feel better. The last line of the chorus is especially endearing, as she implores them to smile while she kisses away each tear. It is a gentle reminder that sometimes, the best way to move past our pain is to lean on the love and support of those around us.
