SOME ENCHANTED EVENING
Barbra Streisand Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some enchanted evening, you may see a stranger,
You may see a stranger across a crowded room,
And somehow you know, you know even then,
That somehow you'll see here again and again.

Some enchanted evening, someone may be laughing,
You may hear her laughing across a crowded room,
And night after night, as strange as it seems,
The sound of her laughter will sing in your dreams.

Who can explain it, who can tell you why?
Fools give you reasons, wise men never try.

Some enchanted evening, when you find your true love,
When you hear her call you across a crowded room,
Then fly to her side and make her your own,
Or all through your life you may dream all alone.

Once you have found her, never let her go,
Once you have found her, never let her go.

Overall Meaning

Barbra Streisand's "Some Enchanted Evening" is a song about love at first sight. The lyrics start by talking about seeing a stranger in a crowded room, and immediately knowing that you will see her again. The second verse describes hearing a woman's laughter from across the room, and feeling as though it will stay with you forever. The chorus questions the unexplainable nature of love, calling out how even the wise cannot articulate why some people are drawn together. The song continues to detail the enchantment of love, encouraging the listener to chase it if they find it, and to never let go once it's attained.

Streisand's voice delivers a powerful rendition of a song that has resonated with audiences since its release. The slow, romantic melody draws the listener in and lends poignancy to the lyrics. The song was originally written for the musical "South Pacific," and has since been covered by numerous artists in a variety of styles. In addition to its wide-reaching impact on the world of music, "Some Enchanted Evening" has also been referenced in popular culture, appearing in movies, TV shows, and books.

Barbara is very original, she change it and own it. Great presentation.

@PrimoPaganiniNeto

What is it in her voice that makes it so touching, so deep-reaching? I have listened to this song for so many months (I bought the CD on The Nederlands a year ago - do not tell me it was the smoke 😜because there was not any) and it still feels like the first time. It is breath-taking, it is soul-touching, it is more than simply a voice. Thank you for sharing. All the best.
