Capricorn
Barclay James Harvest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Capricorn
Man of war
Honour bright
The long midnight

In the hour before
You lose your head
The thief will paint
The sunlight red

Sunlight red
Deep blue sea
Witnessed by
Flocks of ships

As they sail by
In a tower of strength
The sabre frail
Will take the brig
And raise the sail

Caged until tame
Go-between is the name
Scaring death to the strains of their crying
Here lies the tale
Of escapists who sail
With assassins who kill for the morning

Don't paint the sunlight
It's virgin bright
Don't paint the sunlight
Wait 'til the morning light

Capricorn
Man of war
Honour bright
The long midnight
In the hour before
You lose your head
The thief will paint
The sunlight red
Sunlight red

Caged until tame
Go-between is the name
Scaring death to the strains of their crying
Here lies the tale
Of escapists who sail
With assassins who kill for the morning

Don't paint the sunlight
It's virgin bright
The long midnight
In the hour before
You lose your head

The thief will pain
The sunlight red

Overall Meaning

Barclay James Harvest's song Capricorn is a multi-layered piece that is open to interpretation. The lyrics seem to describe a violent conflict between two opposing forces. Capricorn, who is described as a "man of war," is presumably a soldier or warrior who is on the side of "honour." The "long midnight" is a metaphor for the darkness of war and the hour before losing one's head refers to the moment before one becomes overwhelmed by violence and chaos.

The lyrics also describe a thief who is painting the "sunlight red." This is a vivid image that could have several meanings. It could be interpreted as a metaphor for the bloodshed and violence of war. Alternatively, it could be a reference to the rising sun casting a red glow across the sea, which is witnessed by flocks of ships sailing by. The phrase "deep blue sea" is perhaps a nod to the vastness and seemingly endless nature of the conflict.

The song also alludes to those caught in the middle of the conflict, perhaps innocent civilians or non-combatants, who are described as being "caged until tame." The "go-between" could refer to those who try to facilitate peace or communication between the warring parties. The final lines seem to suggest that there are those who are able to escape the violence and chaos of the conflict, but they do so at great risk, sailing with "assassins who kill for the morning."

I was born in 1973, so was 6 years old when this song was released. Strange enough, when I heard this for the first time in 1998, I felt like having memories of a grown man related to it, even though this is physically impossible. Perhaps life in a parallel universe....:) whatever....still an awesome song though:)
