Mockingbird
Barclay James Harvest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rain, sea, surf, sand, clouds and sky
Hush now baby, don't you cry
There's a mocking bird
Singing songs in the trees
There's a mocking bird
Singing songs
Just for you and me
Rain, sea, surf, sand, clouds and sky
Time will see your tears run dry
There's a mocking bird
Singing songs in the trees
There's a mocking bird
Singing songs
Just for you and me

Rain, sea, surf, sand, clouds and sun
Bless the tears of love now gone
There's a mocking bird
Singing songs in the trees
There's a mocking bird

Singing songs
Singing just for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Barclay James Harvest's song "Mockingbird" depict a scene in nature, where rain, sea, surf, sand, clouds, and sky set the soothing background. The singer addresses a crying baby, urging him or her to stop crying and listen to the beautiful sound of a mockingbird singing in the trees. The bird's song is described as something personal that it sings just for the baby and the singer.

The second verse repeats the same imagery and reassures the baby that time will heal their sorrow. The third verse introduces the sun and acknowledges the pain of lost love, but once again highlights the comforting presence of the mockingbird's songs. The bird's song is portrayed as the carrier of solace and healing, a natural source of comfort in a world that's full of tears.

Overall, "Mockingbird" celebrates the serenity of nature and its potential to heal emotional pain. The mockingbird is a symbol of hope and resilience, singing its songs despite any hardships it may face. Its songs are a reminder that beauty and comfort can be found even in the midst of sorrow.

Could never figure out why this band never reached super stardom in the US. Thier music is so heartfelt and melodic - and really, really good.

Hirepgym

the singer used to get so smashed he used to fall over on stage

Mott theHoople

@Hirepgym I saw them live and never saw that.. and even if he did that wouldn't have an affect on them not being big in the usa....

I lived near Weeley in 1971, and I went to the pop festival in August. I didn't know Barclay James Harvest and they came on at night with a full orchestra and played MOCKINGBIRD. We were all mesmerised and I can't explain how magical that was. The group have been a big part of my life ever since.

I was there at weeley They where unforgettable.

Bruce Goodman

@Wanabepetegreen I can remember BJH taking time to set up with a full orchestra and the crowd started to get impatient. Eventually John said over the mike, "Please bear with us. We're trying to achieve the impossible here!" And then of course they blew everyone away.
