Am I The Only One
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Am I the only one who gets to make you laugh,
Laugh until you cry?
Am I the only one who asks you to go,
Go on without me?
Am I the only one who loves when you leave
Your hair down in front of your eyes?

And who do you think I am?
And who do you think I'll be without you?

Am I the only one who had to dress you up
To see how you fell down?
Am I the only one who needs you to go,
Go on about me?
Am I the only one who loves when you leave
Your hair down in front of your eyes?

And who do you think I am?
And who do you think I'll be without you?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Barenaked Ladies' "Am I The Only One" seem to be about a person who is questioning their importance in the life of someone they care about deeply. The opening lines ask if they are the only one who can make the person laugh until they cry, suggesting that they play an integral role in the other person's happiness. The repetition of the line "Am I the only one" throughout the song emphasizes the singer's doubts about their unique value to the other person.

As the song progresses, the singer questions the nature of their relationship with the other person. They ask if they are the only one who has seen the other person at their lowest and whether they are the only one who needs the other person in their life. The line "Who do you think I am?" shows that the singer is unsure if the other person truly understands their feelings, while "Who do you think I'll be without you?" speaks to the fear of losing someone they love.

The final repetition of the line "And who do you think I am?" adds a heartbreaking element to the song by suggesting that the singer may not believe they are worthy of the other person's love. The song as a whole captures the struggle of feeling like you are not enough for someone you care about deeply.

Ed Robertson is seriously someone I look up to. So incredibly talented and such an awesome brother. You can hear and feel the emotion in his voice on this track. Hoping for another album in the near future :-)

Thank you for FINALLY uploading this! For years it's only been on here as a Live version that you could barely hear. Fell in love with it years ago on the Disney channel "Tru Confessions".. so long ago.
