Be My Yoko Ono
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If there's someone you can live without, then do so
And if there's someone you can just shove out, well do so

You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono, whoa, oh

Isn't it beautiful to see two people so much in love?
Bare naked as two virgins hand in hand, and hand in hand in love
Now that I'm far away it doesn't seem to me to be such a pain
To have you hanging off my ankle like some kind of ball and chain

You can be my Yoko Ono
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono, whoa oh (be my Yoko)

Oh no, here we go
Our life is just one big pun
Ono, here we go as Yoko sings woo, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho

I know that when I say this
I may be stepping on pins and needles (ho, ho, whoa)
But I don't like all these people slagging her for breaking up the Beatles
(Don't blame it on Yokey)
I mean if I was John and you were Yoko I would gladly give up musical genius
Just to have you as my very own personal Venus

(To, doo, to, to, to, hit it)
You can be my Yoko Ono (oh, whoa, oh)
You can follow me wherever I go
Be my, be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono, whoa oh

Be my, be my, be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono, whoa

Be my, be my, be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono, whoa
Be my, be my, be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono, whoa, whoa, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Barenaked Ladies' song "Be My Yoko Ono" express the sentiment that if there's someone in your life that you don't need or want around, you should remove them from your life. The song also references the love story between John Lennon and Yoko Ono, portraying it as beautiful despite the criticism that Ono received for causing the breakup of The Beatles. The lyrics suggest that the singer admires the connection between Lennon and Ono so much that they want someone to be their Yoko Ono.

The chorus repeats the request for a Yoko Ono figure to follow the singer wherever they go, acting as a muse and inspiration. The bridge of the song references puns and wordplay, incorporating Yoko's singing style with the refrain "woo, ho, ho, ho, ho."

Overall, the song reflects the idea that true love is worth any sacrifice, even if it means giving up a life-changing career or enduring criticism from others.

"If there's someone you can live without, then do so." I love that line.

@icii8512

the best line in the song!

Through all these comments it is important to note that even though the video is imitating many of Yoko Ono's avant-garde performance art pieces, including "Cut Piece" in which audience members used scissors to cut off her clothing until she was completely naked. The video is also interspersed with various film clips of Yoko and John, which YOKO sent to the band herself to use in their video of the song. She thought it was funny and helped with their video - when Yoko was asked, she said that she liked the song but preferred, "If I Had A Million Dollars" - to me that's pretty cool.

@robgoose

I was wondering how they got permission to use all of those clips! Great comment.

Also, I haven't listened to this song since ohhh 1998 or so and it holds up really, really well.

@@EnglishFuture-xg1gw But the song is ultimately just kind of ambivalent

In this era my dad wanted Millie Vanilli, which was fine musically too, if odd contextually.
