Concert Going
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I look straight in the window, try not to look below
Pretend I'm not up here, I try counting sheep
The sheep seem to shower off this office tower
Its Nine-point-eight straight down I can't stop my knees

I wish I could fly
From this building
From this wall
And if I should try
Would you catch me if I fall?

My hands clench the squeegee, my secular rosary
Hang on to your wallet, hang on to your rings
I can't look below me, or something might throw me
I curse at the windstorms that October brings

I look in the boardroom; a modern pharaoh's tomb
I'd gladly swap places, if they care to dive
They're lined up at the window, peer down into limbo
They're frightened of jumping, in case they survive

I wish I could step from this scaffold
Onto soft green pastures, shopping malls, or bed
With my family and my pastor and my grandfather who's Dead

I look straight in the mirror, I watch it come clearer
I look like a painter, behind all the grease
But paintings creating, and I'm just erasing
A crystal-clear canvas is my masterpiece

I wish I could fly
From this building
From this wall
And if I should try
Would you catch me if I fall?

I wish I could fly
From this building
From this wall
And if I should try
Would you catch me if I fall?
When I fall
When I fall

When I fall
When I

Overall Meaning

fall

The lyrics to Barenaked Ladies' song "Concert Going" have a dark undertone, with a sense of desperation and hopelessness. The song is about a window washer who looks out at the world from the top of a building and wishes he could fly away from his dangerous, precarious job. He longs for a normal life, with green pastures, shopping malls, and his family. He looks in the mirror and sees himself as a painter who is just erasing, and he wishes someone would catch him if he falls from the building.

The imagery in the song is striking, with references to sheep that seem to shower off the building, a secular rosary, and a modern pharaoh's tomb. The contrast between the freedom of flight and the danger of falling adds to the sense of tension and despair. The song ends with the repeated phrase, "When I fall," bringing a sense of inevitability to the situation.

Overall, "Concert Going" is a powerful and introspective song that deals with themes of mortality, ambition, and the struggle to find meaning in life. The lyrics capture the feeling of being trapped in a difficult situation and yearning for a way out. The song is a testament to the power of music to express complex emotions and tell compelling stories.

These guys are the best. They never disappoint in concert. I love Steven Page as well (just responding to comments I'm seeing here) but I get a little tired of people bitching about his not being in the band any longer. He left the band of his own volition to do his own thing, and they pressed on and I'm damn glad they did. I love the post Page records and I think that they are really fun and really good music. BNL has been my favorite band since the mid 90's and Steve leaving didn't change that. Thanks for posting this concert as its been awhile since they have come to my neck of the woods. I go and see them live any chance I get and videos like this are a nice treat between actual live events.
