Easy
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What's a boy to do?
When you tell your tale
And it never fails
I just end up feeling bad for you

With your hang-dog eyes
You can bring me down
Now I'm wrapped around your whole hand
Stop looking so surprised

You make it easy (Easy)
Make it easy (Easy)

I've been burned before
You're not fooling me
There's no mystery
You've forgotten what you're hiding for

Call it self defense
You can obfuscate
And manipulate
But it's only at your own expense

You make it easy (Easy)
Make it easy (Easy)
Make it easy (Easy)
Make it easy (Easy)

Easy to be with you
Easy to obey
Easy to forgive you at the end of the day
Easy now to judge you
Easy to betray
Easy to adore you though you want to run away

It's easy

Look what you have done
I can do the same
Two can play this game
You'll no longer be the only one

You make it easy (Easy)
Make it easy (Easy)
Make it easy (Easy)
Easy (Easy)

Overall Meaning

In Barenaked Ladies' song "Easy," the singer is expressing his feelings towards someone who always tells their sob story and expects everyone to feel bad for them. The opening line, "What's a boy to do?" signals the singer's helplessness in dealing with this person's constant need for attention. He sympathizes with them and it makes him feel bad, hence the line "I just end up feeling bad for you." The singer then goes on to describe how the person's "hang-dog eyes" bring him down and he is completely in their control, as shown in the lines "Now I'm wrapped around your whole hand, Stop looking so surprised."

The chorus, "You make it easy," is ironic, as the singer isn't referring to the ease of being with this person, but rather the ease with which they make him feel helpless and trapped. In the second verse, the singer doesn't believe the person's tall tales and sees through their acts of self-defense and manipulation. He resolves to play the same game and not let this person continue to control him. The final chorus, "You make it easy, Easy," is sung with an added emphasis on the "Easy," as if the singer is mocking the person's behavior.

Overall, "Easy" is a song about control and manipulation in a relationship, and the power one holds if they decide to break free from it. It highlights the fine line between sympathy and manipulation and raises the question of who truly holds the power in such situations.

I had been trying to remember this song for a while. I only knew it had the word "easy" and searches kept getting stuck on other artists. It sounds up lifting and I needed that lately.
