God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman / We Three Kings
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ our Saviour was born upon this day
To save us all from Satan's power when we were gone astray

O, tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
O, tidings of comfort and joy
From God our heavenly Father this blessed angel came
And unto certain shepherds brought tidings of the same
How that in Bethlehem was born the Son of God by name

O, tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
O, tidings of comfort and joy

O, star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light

Born a king on Bethlehem's plain, gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign

O, star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light

Glorious now, behold Him arise
King and God and sacrifice
Hallelujah! Hallelujah, worshipping God most high

O, star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy perfect light

God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay

God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay
God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Barenaked Ladies' version of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen / We Three Kings combines two classic Christmas carols into one medley. The song begins with the traditional God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, which urges those listening to be at peace and not be worried or dismayed. The song then speaks of the birth of Christ, who has come to save those who have gone astray from Satan's power. The lyrics focus on the good news that brings comfort and joy to all.

The second part of the song incorporates We Three Kings, as the lyrics reference the star of Bethlehem that guided the wise men to the birthplace of Jesus. The song shows the wise men bringing gifts of gold to crown the newborn king. The lyrics also reference the king's eventual reign over all. The final verses of the song glorify Jesus as the king and god who was sacrificed for all humanity.

Overall, Barenaked Ladies' rendition of these traditional Christmas carols emphasizes the importance of the birth of Jesus and the joy and hope that it brings to those who believe in him.

The way they snuck We Three Kings in there was just exquisite. And who else but Sarah McLachlan to sing that part? Just beautiful.

I don't generally like to hear traditional Christmas music rearranged a great deal, but Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLaclan hit this one out of the park. One of my favorite Christmas songs now.
