It's All Been Done
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

I met you before the fall of Rome
And I begged you to let me take you home
You were wrong, I was right
You said goodbye, I said goodnight

(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done before

I knew you before the west was won
And I heard you say the past
Was much more fun
You go your way, I go mine
But I'll see you next time

(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done before

If I put my fingers here, and if I say
"I love you, dear"
And if I play the same three chords
Will you just yawn and say
"Ah, I hate it"

(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done before

Alone and bored on a thirtieth-century night
Will I see you on The Price Is Right?
Will I cry? Will I smile?
As you run down the aisle?

(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done before

(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done

(Woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done
(Woo-woo-woo)
It's all been done before

I met you

I'll go mine
That I'll see you
Next time
It's all been done
It's all been done
It's all been done, done, done before
If I put my fingers here
And if I say, I love you dear
And if I play the same three chords
Will you just yawn and say
It's all been done
It's all been done
It's all been done before

It's all been done, done before

It's all been done
It's all been done
It's all been done
It's all been done
It's all been done, before

I never get tired of hearing this song. The Barenakeds can harmonize like crazy!

CSNY vibes.

Lisa Cunningham hallelujah

Something immortal about this song. The lyrics, the harmony, the symbolism, the perspective, the layered meanings are all spot on. Also, we can understand every word that Steven Page sings. That is reminiscent of the Beatles, Diana Ross, the Supremes, Credence Clearwater Revival––all the great groups. What a fabulous group of Canucks. Miss them but their music lives on.

Amen!

The song is a sendup of the perfect pop song, played (almost) perfectly straight, and thus in itself a perfect pop song. The "same three chords" line in the bridge gives a wink and a nod to the musicians listening, like a Shakespearean aside to the audience. The chord progression, the structure, the progression of the lyrics, everything about it is absolutely hackneyed, but the lyrics themselves are fresh and keep you engaged to the perfectly trite repetition of the final chorus. It is a bloody masterpiece, and I will fight anyone who disagrees. The first time I heard it I laughed so hard I almost coughed up my liver.

Brings me back to college in 98. The tune and lyrics just does it for me. Never knew why One Week was consider their best single to date I like this one so much better.

I graduated from high school that year so it’s so nostalgic for me as well.
