Jane
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The girl works at the store, sweet Jane St. Clair
Was dazzled by her smile while I shopped there
It wasn't long before I lived with her
I sang her songs while she dyed my hair

Jane, divided, but I can't decide which side I'm on
Jane, decided only cowards stay, while traitors run
Jane, Jane

I'd bring her gold and frankincense and myrrh
She thought that I was making fun of her
She made me feel I was fourteen again
That's why she thinks it's cooler if we'd just stay friends
(She thinks it's cooler)

Jane, doesn't think a man could ever be faithful
Jane, isn't giving me a chance to be shameful
Jane, Jane

I wrote a letter, she should have got it yesterday
Life could be better by being together
Is what I cannot explain to Jane

The girl works at the store, sweet Jane St. Clair
(Still dazzled by her smile while I shoplift there)
Still dazzled by her smile while I shoplift there
(The girl works at the store, sweet Jane St. Clair)
No promises as vague as heaven
(No promises as vague as heaven)
No Juliana next to my Evan
(No Juliana next to)

Jane, desired by the people at her school and work

Jane, is tired 'cause every man becomes a lovesick jerk
Jane, Jane (come on)

Overall Meaning

In Barenaked Ladies’ song “Jane,” the singer talks about his infatuation with Jane St. Clair, a girl who works at a store where he shops, and how he ends up living with her. However, the relationship is not without its problems as Jane is divided and the singer can’t seem to decide which side he’s on. He tries to prove his love for her by bringing her gifts like gold, frankincense, and myrrh, but Jane misunderstands his intentions and thinks he’s making fun of her. Despite his efforts to explain his feelings in a letter, Jane remains skeptical of his ability to be faithful and ultimately decides it’s better if they just stay friends.

The song’s lyrics highlight the complexities and confusion that can arise in relationships, particularly when one person is not sure of their feelings. The use of biblical references with the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh adds a religious undertone to the song, suggesting a type of worship or devotion the singer feels toward Jane. The line “no promises as vague as heaven” adds another religious reference and implies that the singer is not making empty promises.

Overall, “Jane” is a relatable song about the ups and downs of romance and the difficulties of knowing what one truly wants in a relationship.

I loved this song from the second I heard it played everywhere around the CNE in 1994.

It is bittersweet to hear this song now that I met, and lost my very own Jane.

She works at a store. I was dazzled by her smile. It wasn't long before we pretty much lived together.

She was divided, but I couldn't decide which side I was on. The side that wanted me, or didn't. The side I wanted to be with, or the one I didn't. Owing to her crippling anxiety over relationships she was always pushing me away. I was a coward when I stayed and put up with the pushing, and a traitor when I let her have her way, and left.

I brought her presents, took her places, endulged her quirky side, she sometimes thought I was patronizing her, when I wanted to show her that I cared.

I often felt like I was 14 again. She made me feel young, and full of vigor and hope. With her unpredictability, I just as often felt confused and unsure of things...again, much like when I was 14 and figuring out relationships.

She thought it would be cooler if we just stayed friends. ...until she wanted more again.

She was damaged by previous relationships with guys who weren't willing to put in the effort. She doesn't think any man is different.

She didn't give me a chance to succeed or mess up.

She is desired by people at her school and work. Guys fall for her, and some get hooked like I did. Trying to prove you are different, I guess puts you in the category of a "lovesick jerk".

It was a heck of a Rollercoaster ride while it lasted. Dating a woman with mental health issues is not a bowl of cherries, that's for sure.

"Still dazzled by her smile while I shoplift there"

This lyric slays me!
Dazzled by her smile,
but still focused enough
to get the shoplifting done.

Who says guys can't walk and chew gum?!?!

@trevgreg2

I will follow you way down wherever you may go
I'll follow you way down to your deepest low
I'll always be around wherever life takes you
You know I'll follow you
Ba, da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, da, da
Ba, da, da, da, da
You know I'll follow you
La, da, da, da, da
Wherever life takes you, you know I'll follow you

This is a poem where I reference this song...

For all that was, is forever gone.
Like a lions injured roar...
He roars not because of the soar,
But says "I will live on - forevermore.
Sometimes the pain is so viciously strong,
It crushes the heart but bi-passes the brain.
Her name - Jane.
Who made me so merry,
But I knew would never marry.
Like a flying, dancing bee until its final hour,
"I WILL FIND YOU NEXT FLOWER!"

This song gives me an overwhelming sense of nostalgia and brings a tear to my eye. When I was around 5 or 6, my dad would work half days on Fridays so he would pick me up from school and take me to get ice cream, go to the mall or go to the park. In the car, he would play his favourite 70s, 80s, and 90s songs that we would both sing a long to including this one which was one of my favourites. Up until today I forgot about this song and haven’t heard it in years but I heard it playing again for the first time today when I stopped at a drugstore and it unlocked one of my very few precious childhood memories. Love you dad ❤
