Light Up My Room
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A Hydro-field cuts through my neighborhood
Somehow that always just made me feel good
I can put a spare bulb in my hand
And light up my yard

Late at night when the wires in the walls
Sing in tune with the din of the falls
I'm conducting it all while I sleep
To light this whole town

If you question what I would do
To get over and be with you
Lift you up over everything
To light up my room

There's a shopping cart in the ravine
The foam on the creek is like pop and ice cream
A field full of tires that is always on fire
To light my way home

There are luxuries we can't afford
But in our house we never get bored
'Cause can dance to the radio station
That plays in our teeth

If you question what I would do
To get over and be with you
Lift you up over everything
To light up my room, my room

A Hydro-field cuts through my neighborhood
Somehow that always just made me feel good
I can put a spare bulb in my hand
And light up my yard

Light up my yard

Lights in my yard
Light up my yard

Overall Meaning

Barenaked Ladies' song "Light Up My Room" paints vivid imagery of a neighborhood that is not perfect but still provides comfort to the singer. The lyrics start off with the mention of a hydro-field which cuts through the singer's neighborhood. Despite the fact that this may be a blemish on the area, the singer finds solace in this section of his neighborhood. He then goes on to describe how he can light up his yard with just a spare bulb in his hand, perhaps conveying the idea that he is resourceful and can make the best of what he has.

The song then takes on a dreamier tone as the lyrics describe a late night when the wires in the walls sing in tune with the sound of the falls creating a hum that the singer conducts as he sleeps, willing it to light up the entire town. As the lyrics progress, the singer describes various oddities in his neighborhood, from a shopping cart in the ravine to a field full of tires that are always on fire. However, these mundane anomalies do not deter the singer as he uses them to light his way home.

The song ends with the singer craving to be with his loved one and doing anything it takes to make it happen. The lyrics suggest that he would lift her up over everything to light up his room, implying that his love for her is strong and illuminating.

Great tunes play in my teeth. Lucy was debunked, but the idea is still beautiful.

This song reminds me of my first summer living on my own in my first apartment (circa 1998) after my now former stepdad kicked me out of the house. I got a job and that summer was the summer of a Lilith Fair tour which I went to when it came to where I was living in Idaho at the time. I ended up not having a blanket to sit on the lawn with and two ladies who attended a college age group through the Methodist church lent me one of their blankets. After the show, we traded numbers because they'd invited me to check out the group at the next meeting.

I made fast friends with several people in the group and the minister who led the group, too. The next concert that summer that came through town was The HORDE Tour with BNL, Blues Traveller and Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals and several other bands. I remember BNL playing many songs from this CD the night of the show. Every time i hear these songs, I think of that year. Lots of change, but many good times, too.
