Off His Head
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Any other night, I could leave you alone
Anybody might just believe I had flown
Maybe they were right when they said that
Everybody makes mistakes
But not everyone breaks hearts
Should have been a new start
Save me
When you don't know what to say
And you won't have any sway
You hold your own
And do it anyway

When you meet your match,
you can bow down or stand
Always there's a catch,
and it's soon out of hand
As you make a mess, make your best guess
Could it all end the same?
When you pour gas on a bonfire
Everything goes up in flames
What a shame

When you don't know what to say
And you won't have any sway
You hold your own
And do it anyway

And your Daddy's off his head
'Cause he just heard what you said
You're out of hope
And wishin' you were dead

It all gets lost in the translation
It's all in the details
What's the cost of the temptation?
You're gonna pay retail
Fingers crossed for a salvation
Or retaliation at least

And your Daddy's off his head
'Cause he just heard what you said
You're out of hope
And wishin' you were dead

When you don't know what to say
And you won't have any sway
You hold your own
And do it anyway

You hold your own
And do it anyway

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Off His Head by Barenaked Ladies convey a sense of uncertainty and hopelessness that comes with making mistakes in a relationship. The opening lines suggest that the singer is capable of leaving the person they're addressing alone, but is unable to do so on this particular night. This decision, coupled with a realization that mistakes can be made, is set against an acknowledgment that not everyone who makes mistakes is able to avoid breaking hearts. The singer appears to recognize the consequences of their actions and wishes that things could have been different, hence the desire to be saved.

The second verse delves into the idea that everyone meets their match at some point, but people react differently to the situation. You can either bow down or stand up, but there's always a catch that makes the situation spiral out of control. As the situation gets worse, the singer is left to make a mess and hope that things don't end the same, but when you pour gas on a bonfire, everything goes up in flames. The third verse further emphasizes the theme of hopelessness, as the singer wishes and prays for salvation or at least some sort of retaliation, but is left with a feeling of defeat.

The chorus is a repeated reminder that when you don't know what to say and you don't have any sway, you hold your own and do it anyway. It's an anthem of resilience and determination in the face of tough situations, and characterizes the singer's desire to keep going despite the emotional turmoil they're experiencing.

One of the finest songs on the album. The takes a few listens to get used to the new sound but its certainly not a failure.

Looking at the album cover, think there would be room for another brother creeggan in the band again? Just a thought :) Love the album guys! Very tight

Sir Chasm

Is it just me, or is there a bit more of a break between "any other night" and "I could leave you alone" than the other breaks in the song? Maybe it has something to do with the drums or something, but to my ear it's relatively noticeable.

JoeyLeddzDippin94

That's the point. It's a play on words.
