Pinch Me
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's the perfect time of year
Somewhere far away from here
I feel fine enough, I guess
Considering everything's a mess
There's a restaurant down the street
Where hungry people like to eat
I could walk but I'll just drive
It's colder than it looks outside

(Pinch me) Like a dream you try to remember but it's gone
(Pinch me) Then you try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn
(I'm still asleep) When you try to see the world, beyond your front door
(Please God) Take your time, is the way I rhyme gonna make you smile
(Tell me) When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
(I'm still asleep) Just to try to figure out what all this is for

It's the perfect time of day
To throw all your cares away
Put the sprinkler on the lawn
And run through with my gym shorts on
Take a drink right from the hose
And change into some dryer clothes
Climb the stairs up to my room
Sleep away the afternoon

(Pinch me) Like a dream you try to remember but it's gone
(Pinch me) Then you try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn
(I'm still asleep) When you try to see the world, beyond your front door
(Please God) Take your time, is the way I rhyme gonna make you smile
(Tell me) When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
(I'm still asleep) Just to try to figure out what all this is for

Pinch me, pinch me, cause I'm still asleep
Please God tell me that I'm still asleep

On an evening such as this
It's hard to tell if I exist
If I pack the car and leave this town
Who'll notice that I'm not around
I could hide out under there
I just made you say "underwear"
I could leave but I'll just stay
All my stuff's here anyway

(Pinch me) Like a dream you try to remember but it's gone
(Pinch me) Then you try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn
(I'm still asleep) When you try to see the world, beyond your front door
(Please God) Take your time, is the way I rhyme gonna make you smile
(Tell me) When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
(I'm still asleep) Just to try to figure out what all this is for

(Pinch me) (I'm still asleep) Try to figure out what all this is for

(Pinch me) (I'm still asleep) Try to see the world beyond your front door
(Pinch me) (I'm still asleep) Try to figure out what all this is for

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Barenaked Ladies' song Pinch Me touch on themes of existentialism and finding meaning in life. The opening lines, "It's the perfect time of year, Somewhere far away from here," convey a sense of detachment and yearning for escape from one's current circumstances. Despite feeling "fine enough" given the chaotic state of the world, the singer cannot help but question the purpose of it all.

The next verse depicts a carefree afternoon of running through sprinklers and changing into dryer clothes, suggesting a desire for simplicity and a return to childhood innocence. However, this sense of contentment is short-lived, as the chorus repeats the theme of feeling disconnected from reality, dreaming but unable to fully awaken.

The final verse highlights a fear of meaninglessness, wondering if anyone would notice if the singer were to simply disappear. However, the lighthearted tone of the lyric "I just made you say 'underwear'," spoken in the midst of this existential crisis, suggests that perhaps the search for answers need not be taken too seriously.

Overall, Pinch Me is a thoughtful exploration of the human condition and our search for purpose in a world that often feels chaotic and disconnected.

One of the greatest songs ever written about depression.

Ashtonia Melvonious

yup

X Again

@Frank Merker For it to be depression you would have to have nihilism & apathy. Apathy is losing pleasure in the flesh. If you believe there is no point, nihilism. Then pleasure of the flesh is all you have, and you lost that too. However apathy & existentialism is a wonderous thing. You lose the point of what everyone is tied down to, yet they know it not, and can search for real meaning.

If you think that is a delusion. Hey, look at it this way as a Nihilist. If nothing matters anyways, wouldn't it be better to have fake happiness being delusional that there is a purpose for the short time you are here and don't matter?

X Again

@Mitchell Brown Not always. You can reach apathy to find more meaning to life. Searching for inner peace while finding deeper meaning. So if you think apathy is depression. You have a screw loose. You'll never get there being addicted to your pleasures. Try apathy sometime to find more meaning than shallow what feels good in life.

TL:DR Apathy can lead to Truth. Apathy can lead to true happiness. Or as been said many times before. More than the flesh.
