Powder Blue
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

With each mistake you either bend or break
With every word I choose you only seem to bruise
Powder blue always suited you or was your suitor too
Until you're powder blue

You're going off the deep end
I'm going over all the things I've gotta say
Apologies from my front door
I couldn't love you more

The bell was cracked your senses sacked
What once seemed civilized in fear was paralyzed
I made love blind, I lost my mind and now I'm over you
'Cause I'm not under you

We thought we'd drive forever
Now is it okay if I walk you to your car?

Apologies from my car floor
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more

Baby between you and me, love is all we need
You held out your heart so I could watch it bleed
I never thought you could ever fall into my life, so banal
something so light shouldn't hurt at all

Apologies from my front door
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more

I couldn't love you more
Couldn't love you anymore, no, no

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Powder Blue by Barenaked Ladies tackle the themes of love, mistake, and moving on. The first two lines, "With each mistake you either bend or break, With every word I choose you only seem to bruise", suggest that each mistake can either make or break a person, and that every word we speak has a potential to hurt someone we love. The next few lines talk about the color powder blue, which seems to be significant to the person the singer is addressing, perhaps because it suits them or because their suitor liked it. But in the end, the person is reduced to nothing but powder blue, suggesting that their identity has been overshadowed or consumed by the relationship.

The chorus, "You're going off the deep end, I'm going over all the things I've gotta say", implies a distance between the two people, as the singer is reflecting on things they should have said before. The apologies in the second verse, "Apologies from my front door, Apologies from my car floor", suggest a feeling of regret and an attempt to make things right. The last few lines, "Baby between you and me, love is all we need. You held out your heart so I could watch it bleed", suggest that love can sometimes be painful, but it is also what sustains us.

Overall, Powder Blue is a contemplative and introspective song about love, mistakes, and the need to move on.

This song reminds me of my friend who passed away unexpectedly and young. We thought we'd drive forever, now is it okay if I walk you to your car? Going over all the things I have to say. But something so light shouldn't hurt at all.

I sit and think about my life to this song.

if I remember right, this song is much older than the B-Side it was made here. Somewhere I heard it was on the Yellow Tape, but it doesn't seem quite right, though I'm pretty sure it's older than this release.

Nope. It was recorded during the Maroon sessions.
