Testing 1
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(One, two, one)

Maybe it would be fun
To get a new opinion
Get a little work done
And forget
Maybe it would be cool
If I rocked it old school
Try to break a gold rule
And a sweat
Better than the first time
Better than the worst time
If I could just reverse time
I'd be set

Testing one, two, three
Can anybody hear me?
If I shed the irony
Would everybody cheer me?
If I acted less like me
Would I be in the clear?

She got a new apartment
It's out on the escarpment
And in her glove compartment
Are my songs
She hasn't even heard them
Since she found out what the words meant
She decided she preferred them
All wrong
Kind of like the last time
With a bunch of really fast rhymes
If we're living in the past I'm
Soon gone

Testing one, two, three
Can anybody hear me?
If I shed the irony
Would everybody cheer me?
If I acted less like me
Would I be in the clear?

We recognize the present
Is half as pleasant
As our nostalgia for
A past that we resented
Recast and reinvented
Until it's how we meant it

Testing one, two, three
Can anybody hear me?
If I shed the irony
Would anybody cheer me?
If I acted less like me
Would I be in the clear?

He's everything that you need
He wiped out on your ten speed
And either he will succeed
Or just suck

Testing one, two, three
Can anybody hear me?
If I shed the irony
Would everybody cheer me?
If I acted less like me
Would I be in the clear?
Begin the testing one, two, three
Can anybody hear me?
If I shed the irony
Would everybody cheer me?
If I acted less like me
Would I be in the clear, G?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Testing 1 2 3" by the Barenaked Ladies suggest a desire for change and a yearning for acceptance. The song begins with a suggestion that the singer wants to try something new and break out of their routine, but is unsure if it will be well-received. They then mention a woman they know who has taken an interest in their music, but upon learning the meanings of the lyrics, decides she prefers them differently. This could symbolize the singer's own fear of not being understood or accepted if they reveal their true selves. The chorus, "Testing one, two, three / Can anybody hear me? / If I shed the irony / Would everybody cheer me? / If I acted less like me / Would I be in the clear?" reinforces this theme, as the singer questions if they would be better off conforming to the expectations of others.

As the song progresses, the idea of nostalgia is introduced. The singer acknowledges that the present is not as enjoyable as the past they remember, even though they may have disliked it at the time. The lyrics suggest a desire to rewrite history and make it the way they wanted it to be. This could be interpreted as a longing for a simpler time, or perhaps a need for control in a chaotic world.

The song ends on a somewhat ambiguous note, with the introduction of a new character. It is unclear who this person is or what their significance is to the rest of the song. The lyrics suggest that this person has the potential to either succeed or fail, leaving the listener to wonder what the singer's own fate might be.

Overall, "Testing 1 2 3" is a song about self-doubt, the search for acceptance, and the desire to change one's circumstances. It is a relatable theme that many listeners can identify with.

It's so amazing that BNL can write funny songs, serious songs, and also that they can blend funny and serious together seemlessly into a song as wonderfully as they do.

thewishingwell

One of the best songs ever, right here. I can't stop listening to it.

BB1989

Agreed I got hooked when i first heard it

Willie the Orc

I swear my favorite song from a band is always one of the least appreciated. This song is fantastic.

Erik John Reyes

Great music, wonderful lyrics and something you could carry anywhere...5 over 5!

Get Low

This song gets me through rough times.

LinkXToboeXAmaterasu

Wow, this song and band are awesome!

helios1912

This song is laced with lyrics that cut like a scalpel-like "As our nostalgia for the past'll be presented Recast and reinvented until it's how we meant it" - it links in with the hook title line. Earlier, one of the jabs is "She hasn't even heard them since she found out what the words meant"-- I hear this song as a hard, clear look back on a needed break-up

Maleknia

No dislikes so far? That should be a telling sign about the quality of the song!

Shockev

The fact that this has only 6000 views when it is an amazing song by an amazing band posted by an official source is a travesty
