Tonight Is The Night I Fell Asleep At The Wheel
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Driving home to be with you
The highway's dividing, the city's in view
As usual, I'm almost on time
You're the last thing that's on my mind
I wish I could tell you the way that I feel
But tonight is the night I fell asleep at the wheel

No commotion, no screaming brakes
Most of it's over before I awake
From the ceiling, my coffee cup drips
While out my window, the horizon does flips
The worst part was hitting the ground
Not the feeling so much as the sound
Can't help but wonder if all this is real
'Cause tonight is the night I fell asleep at the wheel

Rubberneck traffic and passersby
A slow motion Walter, the fire engine guy
Stand around with their mouths open wide
I heard some idiot ask if someone's inside
With the 'Jaws of Life' they tried and they tried
Nobody here can know how I feel
'Cause tonight is the night I fell asleep at the wheel

I guess it's over now
'Cause I've never seen so much
Never seen so much, never seen so much
Never seen so much

I guess it's over now
'Cause I've never seen so much
Never seen so much, never seen so much blood

In all the confusion, there's something serene
I'm just a posthumous part of the scene
Now I'm floating above looking in
As the radio blares and wheels spin
I can see my face slump with a grin
And you

You're the last thing on my mind
You're the last thing on my mind
You're the last thing on my mind
You're the last thing on my mind

Suddenly things become unsound
Stumbling on the shaky ground
Given arrows to shoot tornadoes down
Shoot them down to the ground

Saw a falling leaf, good luck, jump to grab
Much to our surprise, a butterfly
And it sunk in this induration
Induration in our lives

Inside ourselves, a hidden sun, that burns and burns
But never does any harm to anyone

Shivering madly in the dark
Like an animal abandoned in the car park
And she held me, and then she showed me the
Beauty of the human heart

Inside ourselves, a hidden sun, that burns and burns
But never does any harm to anyone
A hidden sun, that burns and burns
But never does any harm to anyone

Anyone
Ooh, anyone, hmm

Hidden sun (sun)

Hidden sun, ooh (sun)

Overall Meaning

The song "Tonight Is The Night I Fell Asleep At The Wheel" by Barenaked Ladies is both catchy and chilling, telling a story of a driver who falls asleep while driving and crashes. The song's lyrics describe the driver's thoughts and sensations before, during, and after the accident. The song's tragic theme is conveyed not only with the lyrics but also with the melody and the melancholic tone of the singer.

In the first stanza, the driver seems to be thinking about his lover, which is the last thing he thinks about before he falls asleep. In the second stanza, the driver describes how the accident happened in slow motion and how he experienced it only partially. The driver then describes the aftermath of the accident, with people standing around him, and he realizes that his life is about to end. In the last stanza, the driver describes seeing the accident from above, realizing that he is dead, and being at peace with it.

The lyrics of the song are full of symbolic and metaphoric language, making the song more complex than just a simple story about a car crash. The song's imagery suggests that life is unpredictable and fragile and that we should appreciate the beauty of the world before we lose it. The song's atmosphere is eerie and haunting, which accompanies the lyrics perfectly.

This song feels like it was supposed to be an after-thought on the album, but it's my favourite track on the whole thing. It's eloquent, well-paced, provocative, develops well, and has a satisfying conclusion. Excellent songwriting.

@gabe_s_videos

Funny you say that, because I was recently commenting on a video about the best album closers, and I think it's the perfect conclusion to Maroon: an album all about the banal internal struggles that come with being a man in his 30s, things like commitment, trust issues, feeling like you're too old to achieve your goals, etc. and it ends with a song about a young man dying in a car accident. I like to think of it as saying "Don't spend too much of your life worrying about the small stuff, because it could be over at any minute."

@tadshackles

Literally one of my favorite songs of all time. It's perfect. Few songs go on repeat in my car, this one does most often.

@julietarosales1204

You're gonna crash lol

@LudusAurea

Same.

@kellenoconnor4396

dude is that bad luck? I think thats bad luck

@desertbill01

My daughter and I sang along to this at the top of our lungs as we made our late night 50 mile drive home over a twisty mountain road. It was our anthem to fate. BTW, we both made it.

@katew3891

i think this is my fav comment ever.

@genevieve1561

I love how when he begins the song you think "last thing on my mind" means he couldn't care less and then at the end it turns out to be very last thing he thinks about. Too much.

@SeafoamSmiles

That's my favourite thing about this song. It's genius, really.
