BarlowGirl's Philosophy
The band has gained a following with their "Anti-Conformity" message of "Don't be conformed, be Transformed" from Romans 12:1-2. Besides believing in abstinence and modesty, the band has also taken a stand on not dating, but their main message remains that people should look to God for love and security, and he will bring everything else into our lives. Very simply, trust God. They encourage people to trust the unseen. Just because you can't see God doesn't mean He isn't there!
Self Titled Debut Album
BarlowGirl instantly hit the spotlight in 2004 with their acclaimed self-titled debut album, coupled with the success of its first single, Never Alone. The longest running No. 1 song in 2004 on R&R’s CHR and CRW Rock charts, Never Alone was named "Song of the Year" on each of these charts. The CD has sold over 250,000 units (as of April 2005) and featured the singles Never Alone and Mirror which both garnered much airplay on Christian radio stations. These number one songs earned the trio four 2005 GMA (Gospel Music Association) awards (formerly the Dove Award) award nominations, including the prestigious Best New Artist award, Best Rock Song and Rock Album. The trio was the best selling new Christian artist of 2004. BarlowGirl received a 2006 GMA award nomination for Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year for Mirror.
Another Journal Entry
Their second album, Another Journal Entry, was released on September 27, 2005. The first single from the album, Let Go, had already begun receiving airplay on Christian radio stations. Their next single from this album, I Need You to Love Me, has also received recent some airplay on some Christian radio stations after the album's debut. The album debuted at #3 on Soundscan's Christian album chart, and, as of Oct. 10, is at 85 on Billboards Top 200 Current Albums chart. The trio was nominated for three additional 2006 GMA (Gospel Music Association) awards: Group of the Year, Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year, and and Rock Recorded Song of the Year for Let Go.

BarlowGirl Lyrics

Black and white has never been my thing
I'll take my drink lukewarm now
Hot and cold is not the thing for me
Absolutes are hidden
I've buried my convictions
Numb to what I'm living for
Help me stop this compromise that justifies these lies
I need Your passion in this life
I don't want to impose
Who really needs to know what I believe
Cause no one likes rockin' boats
And who would care to see the way I see
So give me the fire, yeah
God give me Your fire
And raise this life higher
The lyrics of BarlowGirl's song "Grey" express the internal conflict that arises when a person abandons their convictions and compromises their beliefs in order to fit in with the world. The song is about the fear of rocking the boat, about wanting to keep things lukewarm to avoid confrontation or criticism from those who do not see things the same way. It is about the struggle to stay true to oneself and to one's own beliefs, despite the pressure to conform.
The opening lines of the song, "Gray's my favorite color/Black and white has never been my thing" set the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer is not comfortable with absolutes, with the world being painted in clear black and white without any nuance or complexity. She prefers the ambiguity of gray, the space where she can hide her convictions and avoid taking a stand. The line "I'll take my drink lukewarm now/Hot and cold is not the thing for me" reinforces this idea. She does not want to take a strong stand because it is too uncomfortable, too polarizing. Instead, she would rather keep things lukewarm and maintain the status quo.
But she recognizes that she cannot continue to bury her convictions and live a numb existence. She cannot keep compromising and justifying her lies. She needs God's passion in her life to bring clarity and purpose. The line "Help me stop this compromise that justifies these lies/ I need Your passion in this life" is a plea to be rescued from the cycle of apathy and lukewarm faith.
In summary, the lyrics of "Grey" by BarlowGirl are powerful and thought-provoking. They capture the struggle of living a life of conviction and the temptation to compromise in order to fit in. The song is a call to action, urging the listener to embrace their faith and to seek God's passion in their life.
