BarlowGirl's Philosophy
The band has gained a following with their "Anti-Conformity" message of "Don't be conformed, be Transformed" from Romans 12:1-2. Besides believing in abstinence and modesty, the band has also taken a stand on not dating, but their main message remains that people should look to God for love and security, and he will bring everything else into our lives. Very simply, trust God. They encourage people to trust the unseen. Just because you can't see God doesn't mean He isn't there!
Self Titled Debut Album
BarlowGirl instantly hit the spotlight in 2004 with their acclaimed self-titled debut album, coupled with the success of its first single, Never Alone. The longest running No. 1 song in 2004 on R&R’s CHR and CRW Rock charts, Never Alone was named "Song of the Year" on each of these charts. The CD has sold over 250,000 units (as of April 2005) and featured the singles Never Alone and Mirror which both garnered much airplay on Christian radio stations. These number one songs earned the trio four 2005 GMA (Gospel Music Association) awards (formerly the Dove Award) award nominations, including the prestigious Best New Artist award, Best Rock Song and Rock Album. The trio was the best selling new Christian artist of 2004. BarlowGirl received a 2006 GMA award nomination for Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year for Mirror.
Another Journal Entry
Their second album, Another Journal Entry, was released on September 27, 2005. The first single from the album, Let Go, had already begun receiving airplay on Christian radio stations. Their next single from this album, I Need You to Love Me, has also received recent some airplay on some Christian radio stations after the album's debut. The album debuted at #3 on Soundscan's Christian album chart, and, as of Oct. 10, is at 85 on Billboards Top 200 Current Albums chart. The trio was nominated for three additional 2006 GMA (Gospel Music Association) awards: Group of the Year, Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year, and and Rock Recorded Song of the Year for Let Go.

'Cause Mirror you've always told me who I am
I'm finding it's not easy to be perfect
So sorry, you wont define me
Sorry, you don't own me
Who are you to tell me
That I'm less than what I should be?
I don't need to listen
To the list of things I should do
I wont try, I wont try
You don't define me, You don't define me
Mirror I am seeing a new reflection
I'm looking into the eyes of He who made me
To Him I have beauty beyond compare
I know He defines me
Who are you to tell me
That I'm less than what I should be?
Who are you? Who are you?
I don't need to listen
To the list of things I should do
I wont try, I wont try
You don't define me, You don't define me
The lyrics of BarlowGirl's song Mirror speak to the struggle of self-acceptance and the often negative influence of societal standards on an individual's self-image. The singer speaks directly to her reflection in the mirror questioning if she has finally achieved the societal ideal of physical perfection. The mirror has always represented the voice that informs her of who she is and what she should look like. However, she is beginning to realize that striving for perfection is not easy and the outdated ideal of beauty that she has been holding herself to has become exhausting.
Through the lines "Sorry, you won't define me. Sorry, you don't own me," the singer is expressing a desire to no longer rely on the mirror to determine her worth. She rejects the notion that the mirror holds the power to define her and decides to take control of her own identity. She then asks the mirror, "Who are you to tell me that I'm less than what I should be?", emphasizing that the mirror does not have the authority to dictate her self-worth.
In the final verse, the singer declares that she is beginning to find a new reflection. She looks to the one who created her to find her beauty beyond compare. She's learned that putting her trust in God, rather than in societal standards or her own negative self-talk, will bring her a sense of peace and self-assurance. The lyrics emphasize the idea that individuals should not rely on external factors to validate themselves, but rather should seek worth and acceptance from within.

It's amazing how well i can connect with this song. The second verse, about seeing how beautiful you are to God, that got me right on. For a moment today i could literally see myself the way God does. Then when i looked in the mirror, all i saw was me the way I usually do. I mean, this song is perfect for me.
