Mirror Mirror
BarlowGirl Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mirror, mirror on the wall, have I got it?
'Cause Mirror you've always told me who I am
I'm finding it's not easy to be perfect
So sorry, you wont define me
Sorry, you don't own me

Who are you to tell me
That I'm less than what I should be?
Who are you? Who are you?
I don't need to listen
To the list of things I should do
I wont try, I wont try
You don't define me, You don't define me

Mirror I am seeing a new reflection
I'm looking into the eyes of He who made me
To Him I have beauty beyond compare
I know He defines me

Who are you to tell me
That I'm less than what I should be?
Who are you? Who are you?
I don't need to listen
To the list of things I should do

I wont try, I wont try
You don't define me, You don't define me

Overall Meaning

The song "Mirror Mirror" by BarlowGirl is a powerful message about self-acceptance and rejecting societal pressures to fit into a certain mold. The lyrics begin addressing a mirror, which is a commonly used symbol in literature and music to represent self-reflection and self-judgment. The singer questions the mirror's power to define her and control her self-worth. She asserts that the mirror has always told her who she is and that she is realizing that it's not easy to be perfect.

The singer then speaks directly to the mirror, telling it that it won't define her and it doesn't own her. This is a clear statement of self-empowerment and an act of rejecting societal pressures to conform. She questions the authority of the mirror, asking who it is to tell her that she's less than what she should be. The singer then rejects any guidance or advice the mirror may offer and asserts that the mirror doesn't define her.

The song takes a turn in the latter half of the chorus, as the singer describes seeing a new reflection in the eyes of God, who made her. This is a reference to the Christian belief that humans are made in God's image and that their true worth and beauty come from their relationship with God. The singer asserts that she knows that God defines her and not the mirror or any external force.

Overall, "Mirror Mirror" is a powerful message about rejecting societal pressures and accepting oneself for who they are. The use of the mirror as a symbol of self-reflection and self-judgment is effective in conveying this message, as is the shift to God as the true defining force in the singer's life.

You're not fat. You are not ugly. Even if you happen to be overweight (and unless a doctor has said so, you aren't) you are gorgeous. God made you the way you need to be. He has a purpose for you and he created you for it. You have so much worth and beauty, both inside and out. Don't let the mirror or any other human define you. God gives you your worth and no one else has the right to try. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.

I love this song. It always reminds me that God thinks that we are all beautiful no matter what we look like. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of you. Know that you are beautiful even when no one else thinks so.

Used to listen to this all the time when I was bulimic. Years later and I still get a pang of emotion listening to it. It can mean so many different things and help so many different people. Amazing lyrics!!

This song brings back a lot of memories..helped a lot going through the teenage years. I like the tone of righteous indignation in it..Life is so much more than a reflection in the mirror

I sang this song at my church a couple months ago. It means to much to me. I have learned to stop focusing so much on my appearance and to stop worrying when my hair, my clothes, or my makeup aren't perfect. That's not what defines me. It's fun to look nice or play around with my appearance but if I don't look like a supermodel why fret? God defines me and I don't need to listen to the world or my mirror to know how much I am worth. I won't let anyone else tell me what to be.
