Angel Eyes
Barney Kessel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Try to think that love's not around
But it´s uncomfortably near
My old heart ain't gaining no ground
Because my angel eyes ain't here

Angel eyes, that old devil sent
They glow unbearably bright
Need I say that my love´s mispent
Mispent with angel eyes tonight

So drink up all you people
Order anything you see
Have fun you happy people
The laughs and the jokes on me

Pardon me but I got to run
The fact's uncommonly clear
Got to find who's now number one
And why my angel eyes ain't here
Oh, where is my angel eyes

Excuse me while I disappear
Angel eyes, angel eyes.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Barney Kessel's song Angel Eyes depict a person who is longing for someone who is not around. The love they once had is lost, but they can't seem to shake off the memories and feelings associated with that love. The mention of "angel eyes" heightens the longing and the pain experienced by the singer of the song. The phrase "angel eyes" is used to describe someone with a captivating and irresistible gaze, someone who seems to have the power to entrance and captivate you. The singer is tormented by the memory of their love and cannot move on because their ideal partner is not around.

The singer continues to describe the intense nature of their love, stating that it was "mispent" with "angel eyes tonight." Here, the singer acknowledges that their love was misplaced, but they cannot help themselves from feeling the way they do. The song continues as the singer tries to find solace in the presence of others, but is unable to do so, leading to them leaving abruptly. The song ends with the singer making a final plea for their "angel eyes" to return to them.

Another one from the great Barney Kessel! I was looking since a while for a good Angel Eyes solo guitar version but I add difficulties finding one. Angel Eyes is a perfect fit for solo guitar. I wonder why there isn't more guitar version of it, anyway, here's a nice one. I haven't put the chord grids for this was making the transcriptions too compact and the grids were overlapping one over each other. Have fun!

another great job monsieur françois. it is because of seeing your transcriptions i myself find the patience to try and work on my own version of barney kessel's: here's that rainy day :)

Barney had one of the greatest harmonic minds in jazz guitar .His chordal approach is more like a great jazz pianist....he was a one of a kind...he was also a kind and humble man ; rare qualities in one so gifted ....RIP Mr.Kessel...

I like to think this is because barney always thought of himself more as a musician than a guitar player. In an interview about his guitar he said that he cared more about his music than whatever instrument he used to produce it, and that the best part of playing with his ear and his heart was that when he listened to the recording it sounded just like how he heard it in his head. He'll always be my favorite. Indeed, rest in peace barney.

Merci beaucoups, Francois for another gem from Barney ! The Barney, "Plays For Lovers," CD has many great tracks and with your help I'm getting a grip on some of his versions. Do you plan on others from that CD ? "People," would be a challenge - so many chords ! Merci, mon ami !
