All of the members contributed lead vocals and songs, although Walsh was the principal singer and songwriter. Later, the group added keyboardists Rocke Grace and Tommy Stephenson. Having two keyboardists permitted Barnstorm to play the complex arrangements live that it was creating through multitracking in the studio or through the use of session musicians such as Paul Harris (piano) and Joe Lala (percussion).
Barnstorm would record only three albums over its three-year life (Barnstorm and The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get, plus serving as the backing band on Michael StanleyJ's Friends and Legends). All three albums were produced by Bill Szymczyk. Over time, Walsh became particularly frustrated by the way his record company, Dunhill Records, promoted the band, as if they were Joe Walsh solo albums and the others were his backing musicians. Said Walsh, "I wanted to be a band, not a solo artist. Vitale, especially, should've gotten more credit 'cause it wasn't all me. . . . It was in every aspect a collaborative effort."
Barnstorm thus disbanded in 1973.
Here We Go Again
Barnstorm Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Here comes the day
Where sunrise comes from
I am not knowing
I see with stained eyes
Help find my way
It all surrounds me
Here we go
I hear a calling
Each one by name
And so many don't hear
They think it's the same old thing
I feel us falling
Back where we came
It all astounds me
Is it a sad thing, bad thing
I don't know
Oh no
The opening lines of Barnstorm's "Here We Go Again" depict a sense of new hope and beginnings. “I see the sun rise, Here comes the day, Where sunrise comes from, I am not knowing.” The imagery of the sun rising represents a fresh start, but the singer admits that they don't necessarily know where this new beginning is coming from, as if they are still searching for direction. The second stanza speaks to the feeling of being lost, “I see with stained eyes, Help find my way, It all surrounds me, It is all snowing, flowing,” the singer is surrounded by the unknown, but they maintain their faith that they will find their way through the obstacles in front of them.
In the third stanza, the lyrics become more introspective. The singer hears a calling, possibly meaning that they are called to do something greater, but the people around them do not seem to hear it. There is a sense of isolation, as if the singer isn't sure if they are the only ones who hear the call. “I feel us falling, Back where we came, It all astounds me, Is it a sad thing, bad thing,” there's a feeling of nostalgia, as if the singer is falling back into old patterns and wondering if that's a good thing or not.
