Wanderlust
Baroness Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Wading
Milk the keel through tidal slough at dawn
On and on
Grating and lapping at the swollen stinking skin
Imitation
Mating muscles cut through cord
Through mountain's own
Sated but engorged on mother's milk and fed as twins
Bold defecation
Raise the bow and aim for crimson dawn
The lyrics of Baroness's song Wanderlust are deeply metaphorical and open to interpretation, but overall, they describe a journey of discovery and transformation. Starting with the word "perambulation," meaning a leisurely walk, the song sets a slow, deliberate pace. The imagery of "wading" through a "tidal slough" suggests a difficult, uncomfortable journey, but one that is necessary to reach a new destination. The line "milk the keel" is puzzling, but could refer to the process of extracting nourishment from a vessel, or perhaps the challenge of navigating through difficult waters.
As the song progresses, the language becomes more intense, with words like "grating" and "swollen stinking skin" suggesting physical discomfort and struggle. The theme of imitation and mating muscles being cut through cord suggests a separation from the past and the need to forge new connections. The line "sated but engorged on mother's milk and fed as twins" may refer to the idea of being nourished by tradition while simultaneously breaking free from it.
The final line, "bold defecation, raise the bow and aim for crimson dawn," closes the journey on a powerful and almost confrontational note. The image of defecation could symbolize shedding unwanted baggage or breaking free from expectations, while the act of raising the bow and aiming for a crimson dawn suggests a sense of purpose and determination.

Pure magic! The riffs and the guitar harmonies here are something magical! Baroness is just as good as Mastodon, they both kick ass and both are among the best bands in the world, in my opinion. Progressive sludge metal for the win!!!!!

Congratulations relapse! They find so many interesting bands which don't play just grind, noise, -core or whatever else. almost every album distributed by them is far off better than the average. music with heart, blood, tears. So is Baroness.

Saw them open for Deftones last night in Miami Beach and was blown away...awesome band, incredible energy, and they are old school and new school all at once...awesome.

Singing techniques aside Baroness is fabulous. Not only that, but they have showed me that the metal genre can move in more interesting directions. And they have shown me just how beautiful music in general can be, and more specifically, how beautiful metal can be.
