To Love Somebody
Barry Gibb/Robin Gibb Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be lived with you
Lived with you
There's a way everybody say
To do each and every little thing
Honey, what does it bring
If I ain't got you, ain't got, baby?

You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way that I love you

Now in my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so very blind
'Cause I'm a man
Can't you see what I am?
I live and I breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you, ain't got you, baby?

You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way that I love you

You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you, yeah

Baby, you don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

No, no, no, no (you don't know what it's like)
To love somebody
To love somebody
To love somebody

The way I love you
The way I love you

Overall Meaning

The song "To Love Somebody" by Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees is a classic love ballad that expresses the deep desire and longing of a man for the woman he loves. The opening lines set the tone for the entire song, as he talks about a certain kind of light that had never shone on him before, a light that he wants to be shared with his lover. He wants his life to be lived with her, but he is aware that there are certain ways of doing things that everyone seems to know, yet none of it really matters if he doesn't have her by his side.

In the next verse, he reflects on his own state of mind as he visualizes the face of the woman he loves. He knows that he is blindly devoted to her, willing to live and even breathe for her, but he is aware that it might not be enough if he doesn't have her. He repeats the refrain, "You don't know what it's like, baby," conveying the utter desperation and frustration he feels in trying to make her understand the depth of his love for her.

The song is a classic example of the power of love and how it can drive a person to extremes. The lines resonate with anyone who has experienced unrequited love or the intense feelings that come with being in love. It is a timeless classic that has been covered by numerous other artists, including Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Michael Bolton, and Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins.

I wholeheartedly believe that Barry had Robin sing the first verse because he knew how much Robin had been missing Mo. You can tell by how Barry is looking at Robin at 0:48 onward. After Robin's death Barry said in more than one occasion that the greatest pain in the last 10 years of Robin's life was losing Mo. He (Robin) never got over it and it had done all kinds of things to him. This performance is just one of the outlets of Robin's dedication to Mo. So heartbreaking. Now they are in heaven together along with their baby brother Andy forming another version of the Bee Gees. RIP Mo, Robin and Andy. You're sorely missed. 💔
