What Kind Of Fool
Barry Gibb Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was a time when we were down and out
There was a place when we were starting over
We let the bough break
We let the heartache in
Who's sorry now

There was a world when we were standing still
And for a moment we were separated
And then you found her
You let the stranger in
Who's sorry now

Who's sorry now
What, what kind of fool
Tears it apart
Leaving me pain and sorrow

Losing you now
Wonderin' why
Where will I be tomorrow

(Forever learning what we are)
(To be without each other)
(We'd be remembering ?)

There was a time when we were down and out (and we cry)
There was a place when we were starting over
We let the bough break
We let the heartache in
Who's sorry now
Who's sorry now

What, what kind of fool (what kind of fool)
Tears it apart (tears it apart)
Leaving me pain and sorrow (ahh)

Losing you now
How can I win
Where will I be tomorrow

Was there a moment when I cut you down (no)
Played around
What have I done
I only apologize
For being as they say, the last to know
It has to show
When someone is in your eyes

(What kind of fool) What kind of fool
(Tears it apart) Tears it apart
(Leaving me pain and sorrow) Leaving me pain and sorrow (ahh)

Losing you now
Wonderin' why
Where will I be tomorrow
(What kind of fool) What kind of fool
(Tears it apart) Tears it apart
(Leaving me pain and sorrow) Leaving me pain, pain
Losing you now (losing you now)

How can I win (how can I win)
(Where will I be tomorrow) Where will I be tomorrow (oh)

Overall Meaning

Barry Gibb's song "What Kind of Fool" is a heartbreaking ballad about a lost love. The lyrics describe a couple who were once down and out but had found a way to start over. However, their relationship had been torn apart by a stranger. The persona of the song is asking "What kind of fool tears it apart, leaving me pain and sorrow?" The song's protagonist is still in love with the person who had left, pondering where they will be tomorrow, and questioning what kind of person could do something like that. The singer apologizes for being the "last to know" and for not realizing the importance of their relationship before it was too late.

The song is brimming with emotion and highlights the excruciating pain of a broken heart. The lyrics explore both guilt and anger, with the persona simultaneously blaming themselves and the person who left. The song's chorus is particularly poignant, with its repeated question, "What kind of fool?" emphasizing the sense of betrayal felt by the singer.

"What Kind of Fool" was first released in 1988 and was one of the most popular songs from the album. It was written by Barry Gibb and Albhy Galuten, and the song was subsequently covered by a number of artists including The Tymes and Diana Ross.

This song brings back so many memories of the year 1980, when my brother was alive and my beautiful mum was alive, as so much tragedy to our family happened afterwards, as I lost both my brother and mother one after the other in 3 years. What a beautiful song to remember both and at the same time with such tragic memories that this song brings back to me😭😭😭unbelievable song with such brilliance and perfection, hail Barry Gibb and Barbra Streisand
