Thunderbirds
Barry Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind!
Like a tunnel that you follow to a tunnel of its own
Down a hollow to a cavern where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving in a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind!

Keys that jingle in your pocket, words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly, was it something that you said?
Lovers walking along a shore and leave their footprints in the sand
Is the sound of distant drumming just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway and the fragment of a song
Half remembered names and faces, but to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over you were suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning to the color of her hair!
Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel

As the images unwind, like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Barry Gray's "Theme From U.f.o." describe a sense of circular motion and never-ending cycles. The imagery suggests that the world and our experiences within it are like a series of interconnected loops, constantly repeating and overlapping. The song draws on a variety of metaphorical images to convey this concept, such as a snowball rolling down a mountain, a carousel turning around the moon, and a clock with hands endlessly moving past its face. The idea of circularity is reinforced by the repetition of the phrase "like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel," which creates a sense of rhythm and cyclical movement.

Has there ever been anyone who doesn't like this theme ? If there was ever a public vote for the best ever kids programme theme, this would win by a landslide. Without doubt, simply the best theme music EVER !

I am not ashamed to say that after 52 years of watching TB, I am still getting major chills & goosebumps up & down my spine. I'm getting a major adrenaline rush coursing through my body and it is so intense that it leaves me feeling like a porcupine on the defense, with all body hairs standing straight. I mean all body hairs, no exceptions lol........Truly an electrifying experience.

Same here. I remember I was sitting and thrilled in front of TV at 5:00pm when it started in my area after school. The magnificent orchestral music created a big part of my excitement. It still does. The entire TB is an excellent production. I would not be able to enjoy it without the Japanese-dubbed version, but TB was my best favorite foreign TV show in 1970's. Yes, long long time ago, in a small island in Japan.

Great words I’m 54 now. Where did all the time go. And what a show for us when we were kids. Loved it and still do. Got the box set. Reminds me of a very happy childhood 👍much better than the rubbish today. Morals and upstanding. Stay safe
