Gotta Go
Barry Kristen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hmm, I gotta go
I'm juist gonna pack up and go
I'm finally gonna leave this town it's killing me
'Cause ten years is a long time for
Someone with a short life and
I gave it all I could, I did now

Would you love me if I was a junky
I can be cool I could be something
It's just not what I believe in
It's just not what I believe in

Hmm, did you notice
I stood there by the door
And I stood there through all your changes
But I guess we all have to grow up sometimes
We all have our lives to live
We all have to find out what it is we can give so

Would you love me if I was a junky
I can be cool I could be something
It's just not what I believe in
It's just not what I believe in

Hmm... I'm going
Hmm... I'm going

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Barry Kristen's song "Gotta Go" express the singer's desire to leave the town they've lived in for ten years. They feel that it's "killing" them because they have a short life and have given everything they can. The singer addresses someone who they're uncertain about-- asking if this person would still love them if they were a "junky." The singer acknowledges that they have the capacity to be "cool" or "something," but that doesn't align with their beliefs. As the song progresses, the singer mentions that they've been present for this person's changes and growth but that everyone has to grow up and find their own path.

The lyrics to "Gotta Go" express a level of frustration with stagnancy and wanting to move forward. The singer acknowledges that they've given everything they have, and it hasn't paid off in the way they need it to. The song also touches on the idea of perception and the fear of being loved for the wrong reasons. The singer poses the question of whether someone would still love them if they were a "junky," alluding to the fear of being loved only for something surface-level and potentially harmful to themselves.

I always loved her song on the Cruel Intentions soundtrack and wondered what happened to her. I finally decided to order her CD cause her music is unavailable for streaming. It's 2021 and I'm obsessed with her record "The Beginning, The Middle, The End." Her record label really dropped the ball on her. Super talented and influential. Still sounds fresh 25 years later.

Big long story as to how so much talent was ignored & wasted. She has 2⃣0⃣ songs that will NEVER be heard, however, went on to have a successful career as a psychologist specializing in rMRI therapy.

Played this album to absolute death, awesome stuff. Great to finally see a promo video. Last thing I heard her on was playing with Tanya Donnelly circa her Beautysleep album, she plays on the Sleepwalk EP bsides.

WOW! Thanks for posting the video. I bought the cassette in 1996/97 and don't know whether it's still playable. Ironically considering it was never a famous one, I managed to find the album very easily in a record store and it was the only one there available. It has always been one of my favorite from the 90's gems. Just to let you know that you are not alone.
