Me & You
Barry Louis Polisar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Me and you singing on the train,
Me and you listening to the rain,
Me and you we are the same
Me and you have all the fame
We need, indeed,
You and me are we.

Me and you singing in the park
Me and you light candles in the dark
Me and you we are the spark
We'll watch that light just make an arc
To say someday
There will be a better way.

Me and you were waiting for the dawn
Me and you and all the places we've gone
Me and you, sitting on the lawn
Me and you just singing a song
A rhyme to shine
And to pass the time.

Me and you singing to all
Me and you were not so small
Me and you can stand up tall
Me and you just having a ball

Happy to be
You and Me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Me & You" by Barry Louis Polisar embody a message of love and friendship. In the verses, the singer is singing with someone they adore and cherish, sharing intimate moments and building memories together. The song emphasizes the beauty of simplicity, such as singing in the park or listening to the rain, and also highlights the importance of being true to oneself - "Me and you were not so small" - and supporting each other to reach new heights and celebrate their individuality - "Me and you can stand up tall."

The song's chorus is a short and catchy mantra that reinforces the idea that the singer and the person they're singing to are two halves of a whole: "Me and you, we are the same, Me and you have all the fame, We need, indeed, You and me are we." The reference to fame might seem out of context, but it's not about superficial achievements or being in the public eye; rather, it's a nod to the fact that the singer considers themselves and their friend special and worthy of attention.

In essence, "Me & You" is a celebration of human connection and the ways it can make life richer and more meaningful. It's a reminder to cherish the people who love us unconditionally, and to make time for the simple joys that bring us together.

I wrote this song in 1974 and released it on my first album in 1975. "All I Want is You" was recorded a couple years later and both used in the film JUNO. I have all my sweeter love songs on an album called "Naturally Sweetened." The rest of my songs are for kids.

I kept hearing this song on the Xfinity ad on tv. Now I have found it and it is wonderful! Congrats to Barry for a fabulous song! It reminds me of another great folk song that was heard in the last episode of Northern Exposure. I think it was called My Town. In a world full of airwaves spitting trash and vulgarities, these two calm the mind and make the heart feel alive.
