In 1978, five of his albums were on the best-selling charts simultaneously, a feat equaled only by Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Mathis. He has recorded a string of Billboard hit singles and multi-platinum albums that have resulted in his being named Radio & Records number one Adult Contemporary artist and winning three straight American Music Awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist. Several well-known entertainers have given Manilow their "stamp of approval," including Sinatra, who was quoted in the 1970s regarding Manilow, "He's next." In 1988, Bob Dylan stopped Manilow at a party, hugged him and said, "Don't stop what you're doing, man. We're all inspired by you."
As well as producing and arranging albums for other artists, such as Bette Midler and Dionne Warwick, Manilow has written songs for musicals, films, and commercials. From February 2005 to December 30, 2009, he was the headliner at the Las Vegas Hilton, performing hundreds of shows before ending relationship with the hotel. Somewhere waiting for me
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailing
Somewhere beyond the sea
She's there watching for me
If I could fly like birds on high
I'd go sailing
It's far beyond the stars
It's near beyond the moon
I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon
We'll meet beyond the shore
We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailing
I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon
We'll meet (I know we'll meet) beyond the shore
We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailing
No more sailing
So long sailing
Bye, bye sailing
The lyrics of "Beyond the Sea" by Barry Manilow depict a love that is separated by distance but steadfast in its affection. The singer yearns for his lover who is waiting for him beyond the sea, and the imagery of the golden sands and sailing ships create a romantic and nostalgic mood. The sentiment of the song is one of hope and determination to reunite with his lover, no matter how far the distance. The phrase "beyond the sea" is used metaphorically to represent the vastness of love and the belief that it transcends physical boundaries.
In the second verse, the singer expresses his desire to fly like birds on high to reach his lover's arms. He is willing to go to any length to be with her, highlighting the depth of his love. The third verse builds on the idea that their love is beyond the reach of conventional means of travel, stating that it is "far beyond the stars" and "near beyond the moon." Despite the distance, the singer is resolute that his heart will lead him to her soon.
Overall, "Beyond the Sea" is a romantic anthem that celebrates the power of love to overcome distance and obstacles. The song's nostalgic tone and vivid imagery create a sense of longing and hopefulness that resonate with listeners of all ages.
