Love's Theme
Barry White - Marvin Gaye Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Play our love's theme tonight
My love's here, it's no dream tonight
It"s been so long
Since we've danced to our love song
I know the melody that made him mine
Will be the melody that keeps him close to me (love's theme)

Play our love's theme once more
Make him feel, like he felt before
While the lights are low
Please, let the music flow
I know that the melody that made him mine
Will be the melody that keeps him close to me (love's theme)

Play our love's theme again
Touch his heart, touch his soul and then
Once we sip the wine
His lips will come to mine
I know that the melody that made him mine

Will be the melody that keeps him close to me
Love's theme

Overall Meaning

Barry White's Love Theme is a passionate, sensual tribute to the enduring power of melody in romantic relationships. The song speaks of an abiding love that has endured over time and distance, but which remains vibrant and urgent in the present moment. It begins with a plea to play "our love's theme" - a reference to the song that has come to define their relationship, and the one that has summoned them together once again. The singer reassures their lover that their presence is real, and that this moment is not a dream. They have been apart for a long time, but the love that they share remains steadfast and true.

Throughout the song, the singer entreats the musicians to play the couple's "love's theme" over and over again. For them, this is more than a song - it is the essence of their connection. The music transports them back to a time when their passion was new, and rekindles the same emotions they felt then. As they dance together, they are reminded of the passion that brought them together in the first place. As the song concludes, the couple drink to their love, knowing that the melody that brought them together will keep them close forever.

@Tom Bell~ wherever
you are
and no matter
what you are
doing every time
you hear this song
your mom is sending
you her love to you
and family. imagine
if you can in
Heaven she has met
Barry White
and he was playing
this song
it’s her way of telling
you she will
be at your side when
your time has
come. the tears we
shed here make
the flowers in Heaven bloom.

January 1974 I worked my last shift in the steel mill. The next morning I got on a bus to the Pittsburgh airport to move to California. The temperature was close to zero degrees. My brother picked me up at the San Francisco airport and it was a glorious day driving over the Bay bridge. It was then that this song came on the radio. Was feeling like I never had before. Driving over the bay on a glorious sunny day and listening to this song. It was my start to a whole new life.
