Wasted
Barstool Prophets Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of all of us she was not one
To equate an altered state with having fun
It just wasn't done
She said they'd never get to her
Because she was so full of piss and vinegar
And carry on when friends were gathered
The fact that she was sober never mattered
Seeing friends in revelation mode
Another mystic, cannabistic episode
She couldn't help but wonder why
She'd passed it by up until now
And just whose cat did curiosity kill?
Just one taste and she was wasted in no time
To her amazement she was wasted in not time
There's not too much to letting go
She'd never known how much
A healthy crutch could overtake her
She couldn't recall at all
What her problems with it were
They said "Taste it"
Now she's wasted all the time
She's so complacent
When she's wasted all is fine
There's not too much to letting go
The song "Wasted" by Barstool Prophets is a reflection on the seductive nature of alcohol and drugs. The song's protagonist is initially portrayed as someone who does not partake in substance use, and instead takes pleasure in the company of others, sober and all. She looks upon her high and intoxicated friends with both curiosity and confusion at their behavior, wondering why they need an altered state to have fun. However, after being offered a taste, she finds herself unable to stop, and becomes addicted to being wasted. The song ends with the realization that letting go and giving in to alcohol and drugs is easy, but it comes with a cost.
The lyrics make it clear that the singer's choice to abstain from drugs and alcohol is a conscious one that she feels proud of. She sees her sober state as something to be celebrated and identifies with the phrase "full of piss and vinegar." However, her sober state is challenged when she sees her friends enjoying their high and she begins to wonder if she should try it out for herself. When she does, she is immediately taken by the feeling and becomes "wasted in no time."
The chorus of the song is repetitive, emphasizing the ease with which it is to get "wasted" and the fact that it becomes a crutch when things get tough. The lyrics suggest a warning about how it takes little effort to fall into the trap of substance use, and how it becomes a comfort when reality is too hard to handle.
