Canada Square
Basement Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Last night i fell asleep with my clothes on.

In the middle of summer.

I woke up shaking from the cold.

Beneath these empty covers.
I started sleeping on my back.

Because you used to... and i miss you.

I found your note when i came to.

It was a heartfelt thank you that broke my heart in two.

So pack up and leave this place behind.

Your eyes are so much brighter now.

That i'm too scared to look at you.

In a room so full of people.

I have never felt so alone.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Basement's song Canada Square could have various interpretations, but the most apparent meaning is the one of heartbreak and loneliness. The first verse already sets a melancholic tone, with the singer falling asleep with his clothes on, suggesting that he is too distressed to even change into his pajamas. However, the paradox of doing so "in the middle of summer" creates a sense of confusion and unrest, which reflects the singer's emotional turmoil. When he wakes up, he is "shaking from the cold," which could point to the physical sensation of anxiety or the emotional numbness that one can experience after a breakup.

The second verse brings the image of "empty covers," illustrating the absence of the person who used to share the bed with the singer. The line "I started sleeping on my back/Because you used to... and I miss you" furthers this sense of longing and nostalgia, as the singer tries to replicate a past habit that brought him comfort. The mention of finding "your note" suggests that the relationship has ended, and the note was a goodbye or a thank you. The sentiment of gratitude only adds to the singer's pain, deepening the sense of unrequited love or unfinished business.

The chorus encourages the anonymous addressee to "pack up and leave this place behind," which could mean physical or emotional departure, depending on the listener's interpretation. The singer is too "scared to look" at the other person's "brighter" eyes, which convey a sense of moving on, growth, or happiness. However, this feeling of apprehension could indicate that the singer is not ready to let go or acknowledge that the relationship is over. The final line of the song, "In a room so full of people/I have never felt so alone," encapsulates the universal feeling of loneliness that can accompany heartbreak, even when surrounded by others.
