Somebody That I Used to Know
Basement Alchemy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Somebody
(I used to know)
Somebody
(Now you're just somebody that I used to know)

(I used to know)
(That I used to know)

(I used to know)
Somebody

Overall Meaning

The song "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Basement Alchemy starts off with the artist reminiscing about a past relationship. He remembers feeling lonely even when the person told him that they were right for each other. The lyrics suggest that even though the relationship might not have been all that great, it was love and the pain of it is still felt.

The artist then talks about how one can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness and how it can lead to resignation to the end. He describes how they couldn't make sense of their situation and decided to still remain friends. However, the artist admits that he was glad it was over.

The chorus then comes in where the artist expresses his hurt and frustration towards the person. The person cut him off, made it seem like the relationship never happened and treated him like a stranger. Despite not needing that person's love, being treated in such a way still felt rough. The song ends with the artist saying that the person is now just somebody that he used to know.

Overall, the song is about the end of a relationship and the pain and uncertainties that come with it. It speaks to the universal experience of heartbreak and the different ways in which people deal with it.

Enough with the 31 people this, 52 people that... If you dislike this video, it either means you're a Gotye fangirl or you don't understand talent and think you can do better. Even if you don't like the style, the effort and talent he put into this is awesome.
