Romeo
Basement Jaxx Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You Keep on giving me the Hold up
You know I wish you'd make your mind up
'cause when we get it on its so-so
You use to be my Romeo

'cause you see my dear, I have had enough
Of keeping quiet about all this stuff
Your neurotic like a Yo-yo
You use to be my Romeo

Let it all go(ro-me-o) [Repeat: x4]

You use to be my Romeo

You Keep on giving me the Hold up
You know I wish you'd make your mind up
'cause when we get it on its so-so
You use to be my Romeo

'cause you see my dear, I have had enough
Of keeping quiet about all this stuff
Your neurotic like a Yo-yo
Oh You use to be my Romeo

Let it all go(ro-me-o) [Repeat: x4]
Let it all go
(You use to be My Romeo)

Let it go, let it all go

'cause you left me laying there
With a broken heart
Staring through a deep cold void
Alone in the dark
And I miss the warmth in the morning
And the laughter when I can't stop yawning
But the tears on the pillow have dried my dear
Gonna let it all go 'cause I have no fear

(Ro-me-o)
Let it all go(ro-me-o) [Repeat: x4]

You used to by my romeo (ro-me-o) [Repeat: x4]
You used to by my romeo

Let it go oh oh oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song 'Romeo' by Basement Jaxx express the frustration of someone who is deeply hurt by their partner's indecisiveness and inconsistency in the relationship. The opening lines suggest that the singer is being held back from moving forward by their partner, who keeps changing their mind. The singer fondly remembers the time when their partner was once their Romeo, however, now they feel exhausted and emotionally burnt out from the relationship. The lines "your neurotic like a yo-yo" suggest that the partner's indecisiveness and erratic behavior have been a source of conflict in the relationship. The chorus "Let it all go(ro-me-o)" signifies the singer's willingness to move on from the relationship and the repeated use of 'Romeo' highlights the importance of the partner's decision.

The second verse reveals that the singer has been quiet about their partner's behavior for a while, but it has become unbearable now, and they have to speak up. The lines "But the tears on the pillow have dried my dear, gonna let it all go 'cause I have no fear" show that the singer has accepted the end of the relationship, without feeling scared of being alone. The song ends with the repeated phrase "You used to be my Romeo," which could either signify a longing for what was once a great relationship, or it could be interpreted as the singer waking up and seeing their partner for who they truly are.

This song brings a tear to my eye. 2001, in love with a beautiful girl, blasting this song in my car thinking about her. Of course back then i had 12" subs to bump it. So long ago, the girl is long gone, life completely different, and I'm an old man. Life goes so fast. I'm happy I have that memory though.

@sooperheep

Good move on her part😆hopefully you got rid of the subs

The early 2000 house is something truly magnificent, wonderous... No words to describe it. I only wish i was a young adult clubbing then. Being in my thirties sucks in 2020's. No clubs playing music like this. Missed the WHOLE disco house scene.

@phykin

Too true just unreal stuff.

@John-X

Dude i remember this music from my childhood but i never knew what it was called until now. I've been binging early 2000's house music now, can't get enough.
