The thing I like about Raxx is his clear and direct advice: “Do THIS, upgrade THIS, augment THIS.” It really shows the level of thought that goes into his videos. A lot of other pro gamers just give you some loose guidelines and say “You might do this, but it’s up to you, maybe it’ll work.”

It certainly helps us casual, time-limited wannabe power-gamers a lot! We can then get to a reasonable power level in no time and THEN start to experiment and have fun with modifying builds and trying things out. If you start with a shit build, tweaking it a bit is only likely to result in a slightly less shit build, and can be very frustrating when the power curve hits you between the eyes! ;)

Selling your gems and then buying them back from the same merchant, instead of dropping them also allows you to get duplicates.

I found out about that when I desperately wanted to get rid of my Gem of Ease lol.

Note: 3:35 Watch him mouse over the gems (mutilation guard at 3:57 is a good example) and in the top right you'll see either Rank # or Rank #/#. Rank #/# indicates how high it can go. If it's not there it can scale up to the max.

Should have mentioned that if you don’t have a great ancient and you’re looking for an upgrade, as soon as you invest the time and resources into augmenting the not-great ancient a better one will drop.

I never augmented because I was afraid of "wasting" a gem on ancients that weren't god rolls. I didn't even consider leveling a gem that I wasn't wearing for the purpose of augmenting. Funny how something so simple just didn't cross my mind.

Raxx, this video is incredible. It really left no question in my mind about how to go about augmenting. I'd love it if you could do something similar with blood shards. I'm at the point with my Monk where I have all the items for the build and I'm starting to augment my gear, but not everything is ancient and I'm not sure what the best approach is for the shards. Currently I'm dumping them into a 31 witch doctor to turn into puzzle rings so I can fund the GR gem levels. I can't imagine this is the best idea, but trying to force a specific item as ancient from gambling hasn't really paid off. What's the optimal thing to do with the blood shards?

Thank you for this video. I haven't taken diablo that seriously in previous seasons but I'm slowly getting better. Have finally completed a GR of 108 which is much higher than I used to get. Up to the part now where I need to do stuff like this and look more into better versions of my gear.

Thank you so much for this! I don't know where I read/heard it before, but I was always in the mindset that augmenting is only after you've already gotten near perfect items.

This makes way more sense and will assist me in my progression. I started the season late so I'm looking forward to getting my Augments done!

Just started season 24 about 7 days ago, previous played was season 21. This video is a killer! I augmented my gear IMMEDIATELY (level 100) after I saw this video. Key in this video:
1. I solemnly swear I will augment my character.

To be fair, I was very much a "too good to use" syndrome player. I have some near perfect ancients and two usable primal ancients, but I haven't augmented them because I can't do GR higher than 120 and I feel dumb augmenting sub-145~ gems (I've never had a gem past 125) - but this clearly makes sense, I wont get past 125 if I don't augment to be able to get there. Watched this and immediately augmented about 7 pieces of gear. Need to get some gems up to 110~ and i'll continue until I've augmented every piece of gear.

Another good counter-argument too "I want to save it till I find GG ancient/primal" is great then when you get that GG ancient/primal you can use your next tier 20+ to put it on..now put it on your not so GG ancient, NOW :)

If you look at mutilation guard, it tells you 0/100, so it can be leveled to 100.
For players with connection issued, gems might also be put in the inventory of an alternate character (if present). This will still throw a new legendary gem of that type.
One more thing: The level of the gem will equal the amount of paragon it simulates. So, a lvl 100 gem used for an augment will give 500 main stat, just as 100 paragon in mainstat would. That is an easy way of picturing what augmenting really means in D3.

Something I like to do for my HC toons is copy my main gems to use for augs. That way, if I die, I'll have some gems available so I don't start from scratch (you can also give the gem you want to copy to a separate toon, if leaving a high level gem on the floor makes you queasy)

Tip on the top right on each gem in Gray it lists the X/MAX if they have a max. so the Mutilate gem is limit 100.

Thanks for the video Rax, I have one comment and one question. The comment is that when using Gem of ease to augment, pay special attention to placing the three gems in first. Because if not the cube will also consume the gem and lower the level requirement of the item to 1.
I agree with every word you say regarding SC playing but here is my question, do you still augment your ancients ASAP for HC? Assuming DC is still an issue happening once a week or two. II have been keeping a separate set of back up duplicate gems and a set of gem for support characters. Also I heard people recommend farming speed GRs with second best gears and save the primals for pushing. Do you augment the best then or the ones you are using first, or do you not care about DC at all and farm with the best gears?

This was an amazingly informative video, and as someone that plays way too many games and hops in between them to really get to the depth of any of them this was a lifesaver to get further into the GR. But damn was it condescending at times :P

Even as a veteran I still watch guides just in case I'm missing something. Solid guide and an extra tip you might wish to add if ever updating. IMHO I would only re aug a piece once I have augmented all pieces. Eg your last piece getting a 130 aug is more power the upgrading 4 pieces from 100 to 130. As always, you make fabulous video's with very clear and direct information Raxx. Though, I do have a few other questions and points that I thought on while watching your video here. I noticed you don't have dex gems in your Demon Hunter and your Monk. I am going to guess that the gains for resist all from the Intel gems is better survival wise at higher rifts compared to the diminishing returns on dex and armor? But at the same time when you augment even just a single piece of gear with a 100 gem you are putting more dex on that item at the same time than you would of gotten from gems on your chest piece or close to it if I am off on the math. Am I close at guessing the reasoning? My next question then would be, 'When is it appropriate to switch from main stat gems to diamonds for a given class such as Demon Hunter?' Is there a reason we wouldn't want to augment for Vitality or Intel on DH gear if you only did it on a single piece of gear? Thanks in advance for any replies!

Can you clarify: I think I heard, that at some point, when you are pretty high in paragon main stat, you could augment to the “opposite” for a defence boost instead, i.e. dex and str classes augment to int. and vice versa.

I have this weird OCD thing about keeping my main gems' levels at intervals of 5, so if I ever die or forget to empower a rift, I'll throw the "extra" points into an augment gem instead. Easy way to passively prep for augmentation.

Had to come back to this to double check my info on augments before starting them properly, especially with S27 making EN a regular thing and not seasonal play exclusive (and thus its unique gem purely for augments)
I wonder if an 'updated' version could be made to cover augments and echoing nightmare together since whisper of atonement looks like it'll be the 'go to' augment gem from here on out

Pro tip: level your gems to 80-90 then do the same for your augment gems. get your augment gem as high as you can 80+ then use it, repeat for the rest of your items until all pieces are augmented then continue to push GRs until you have reached your next cap usually around 95-97 repeat the process until Slotted Gems and Augment gems are maxed or as close as you can get them. Continue to use augments as stepping stones for the next augment until you can start max level gems. I did this with a UE Multishot Hunter so I could speed farm 115-120 GRs then started geming better builds.

You can also put the legendary gem in the inventory of another character to trick Diablo into believing that you don't have that legendary gem. That way you prevent loosing the gem if your game crashes or disconnects from server.

I have a question. If a Barb is going to have higher strength inherently through gear and paragon level it would seem like it makes sense to augment with topaz for higher all resist if that character is used as a tank. Wouldnt that increase your toughness more?

It's actually really hard to teach things that are basic knowledge to yourself to others who don't know them. Raxx, you do a fantastic job here. A diablo player on such a high level trying (and succeding) to help newer or more casual players is a rare gem indeed.
I'll show this video to a friend of mine - he's playing games in a very casual (I would go as far and say... unthinking) way. He has put countless hours in D3 and still doesn't know what stats can be on which items, what stats to reroll and so on. He just never thinks about it. I am sure he can learn a lot from watching your videos. Thank you for caring about even the casual or newer players!

Well yes, of course I want to augment my gear once I get my gems leveled, up, but that takes time.
Not all of us can speed through GR 100+ in 3 mins.
Because it takes so long, I want to make sure that the piece I augment is VERY good.

Another way to put the power of augments into perspective is that augmenting your gear is the equivalent of gaining a number of Paragon Levels (past 800) equal to the legendary gem level.

So even augmenting your all your gear with just Level100 augments is the equivalent of gaining 1200-1300 Paragon levels beyond Paragon 800.

I tend to augment items at 60-70 gem level to start (assuming they arent primal or godly) just to get myself boosted up quickly while still finding potential upgrades and then see what GR I am able to hit pretty easily and then start upgrading based on best gear to that level so maybe 120 or something like that, not sure if thats the best strat but seems reasonable

This was bloody brilliant, Rax. I'm a casual and have 'never' augmented a piece of gear, dating back to season 3 when I started. QUESTION: is it worth it to aug as low as gem level 50? You said 'sure, aug at 100, 120, 130' but i've never been that far with gems lol. I'm struggling for gem level 80 right now. Invest in some level 60-70 augs or just hold out?

I’m not nearly as good as raxx but chances are your build needs work if you can’t clear 80’s reliably. I used to do that tho, push as high as I could then I would aug 1-2 pieces and would help me clear a few more

What confuses me is I have all my augments at 100 or higher. I can do GR124, it's a bit of a struggle. How do you keep going forward if we shouldn't go from say 100 to 115 on each gem? Shouldn't that alone help me push to 130, thus getting my gems all to 120?

Thank you so so so much for your detailed explanation about augments. We finally understand what is going on! ^^ There is one question myself and a lot of my friends are confused ~ we noticed that so many players, their best GF, for example, is 125. However, they can level up their gems to like 135. How to do that? If your highest GR level is 125, the chance you can level up your gem to 126 is like 15% or even lower. It is almost impossible to upgrade it to 10 levels higher than your best GF. It is very much appreciated if you can show us how to do it. Many thanks and have a wonderful weekend.

@bonbonglin as i explained, if you pick such player, view his profile, and look in records, you will most likely be able to see 4p 150. Group play was always much more efficient. Last season buffed solo play with follower changes, but it is still better to play in dedicated groups. I also mostly play solo, but if u wanna be compatetive on the leaderboards, solo only is a no go 😅 hope i was able to explain it better this time. Im also a 40yo gamer that dont have any active player friends, in seasons when i had free time to play i joined communities/clans and that made things a bit easier to accomplish. But i always eventualy get kicked due to long inactivity..

I can hardly upgrade my gems with the help of a group. I feel this game is not that easy for a single player to achieve a high GF level ^^. Thank you again for all your kind reply.

As you correctly noticed, that is not possible. That player probably had a better solo record on other classes or in groups you might have missed, which allowed him to up his gems. FYI most solo records are only done AFTER maxing your gems and augs in groups first, so if you only check solo records that can explain it. If no such records exist and it is not on PC it can also be cheating by hack-edit the items. I heard it was once possible, not sure if it was fixed. but AFAIK it cant be done on the PC version.

Raxx, Thank you for the vids. It is difficult for me to do what I need, to achieve what I want. You might say that is easy, hence why I say you are smart.

Lemme simplify my dumbness to you, I came to understand it when you taught me how to play GoD DH. I Knew That I needed to maintain the stacks, I knew I needed to find a way to fire my primary skills at intervals, I knew that I can't strafe while firing my primary skills, I know about force stand still. And when I tried to put two and two together all I got was a headache and gave up on GoD DH.

When you said "I keybinds my force stand still on my spacebar and constantly hold space" I smacked myself in the head. If I had a nice mahogany table, I would have use that instead.

TLDR: Thanks for the great classes and making them so understandable.

You don't have to throw your gems on the ground you can just put them in the bank and have another character take them into their personal stash. By having the gem on a different character Diablo thinks you don't have one. This eliminates the risk of freezing or disconnecting and loosing the gems on the ground.

I have played on and off the past 6 years and never augmented once because it was so hard. Now with echoing nightmares augging to 125 very quickly is stupid easy. It was a literal game changer for me and for the first time I'm pushing GR130+ with my builds with a pretty casual amount of play hours. D3 is so epic in 2022, I love it.

In addition to this video (sorry, if you mentioned it), I wouldn't advise using the XP gem, because if you forget to add the Flawless gems, you get a level 1 item without augment :D
I always use Invigoration and Moratorium for augments, usually farming 14 of them (yay OCD...)

I had been waiting to aug because I didn't have enough stat gems. I knew I could convert them, but I didn't have 9. I didn't even think about broken crown on follower, good tip!

i somehow knew all of this, yet actually knew none of this.... all the information in 1 video and showing how much difference it makes at the end was really helpful.
