Religious Girls
Bass Drum of Death Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Away from the night, I walked you through heaven, and
I saw your preacher outside, disguised as another man.
The beast lives on; the beast lives on in a way.
The beast lives on; the beast lives on in my ways.
A-wo-a-wo-a-woah
We sat around; I thought I could do it.
Threw my shit in a bag, and I bounced right through it.
I saw your preacher over there, and my mind started chucklin'.
Your sister said to me, she said, "I'm already taken."

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bass Drum of Death's song "Religious Girls," have been open to a lot of interpretation. The song seems to have some religious overtones and speaks of a beast, a preacher, and a girl. The first lines, "Away from the night, I walked you through heaven, and I saw your preacher outside, disguised as another man," is a metaphorical description of a religious experience, where the singer is leading someone to heaven, but there is a presence of something sinister in form of the disguised preacher. This line could also be interpreted as the singer leading the girl away from a night of alcohol and drugs, which could be seen as heaven's opposite.

The next few lines carry on with the theme of the beast that lives on, both in a general way and the singer's own way. This could refer to the beast within us all, which we try to control but is always present. The chorus then has an upbeat rock melody, but the lyrics continue to be a little dark with a hint of irony. The "beast" might refer to some inner demons or negative habits, which the singer is trying to overcome.

The final lines, "I saw your preacher over there, and my mind started chucklin'. Your sister said to me, she said, 'I'm already taken,'" is unclear, but again, it could be interpreted as the singer seeking some sort of spiritual guidance, but the preacher and the girl are already spoken for. The song's lyrics evoke a sense of confusion, a desire to escape, but an inability to do so due to external circumstances.
