Overload
Bastille Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Strange fear I ain't felt for years
My boy's comin' and I'm close to tears
I can't let go
Of you now

Imagination playing round for free
In my world I take him out for tea
Oh my god
I can't say no

Skippin' school gotta walk for air
I just had to get out of there
I'm on overload
In my head

Train comes I don't know it's destination
It's a one way ticket to a mad man situation
(I know, I know)

Train comes I don't know it's destination
(I know)
It's a one way ticket to a mad man situation
(I know, I know)

So life's a dream time does come true
And in my sleep I think of you
Feather bed
By myself

Basically probability
Says that fate's gonna side with me
It's been so long
On my shelf

Train comes I don't know it's destination
(I know)
It's a one way ticket to a mad man situation
(I know, I know)

Train comes I don't know it's destination
(I know)
It's a one way ticket to a mad man situation
(I know)

The tension is incredible
I am in charge
Your know how I feel for you
Will you stop or will you just keep goin'
Please don't say no
(No, no, no, no)

Train comes I don't know its destination
It's a one way ticket to a mad man situation
(Oh)

Train comes I don't know it's destination
It's a one way ticket to a mad man situation
(Oh, oh)

Train comes I don't know it's destination

(Oh, oh, oh)
It's a one way ticket to a mad man situation

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bastille's song Overload seem to be about a person who is overwhelmed by their emotions towards someone. The song is a rollercoaster of feelings that they cannot seem to control, and they are afraid of the intensity of their emotions. The first verse says "Strange fear I ain't felt for years, my boy's comin' and I'm close to tears, I can't let go of you now." This suggests that the singer is meeting someone they haven't seen in a long time and they are afraid of how they will feel when they see them. The second verse implies that they are daydreaming about being in a relationship with this person, saying "Imagination playing round for free, in my world I take him out for tea, oh my god, I can't say no."

The chorus mentions a train that comes with an unknown destination, suggesting that the singer is unsure about where this intense emotion will lead them. The line "It's a one-way ticket to a madman situation" suggests that the singer feels like they are losing control of their emotions and fear that they will end up in an unhealthy, obsessive situation. Finally, the bridge implies that the singer knows that they are taking a risk by pursuing these feelings, saying "The tension is incredible, I am in charge, your know how I feel for you, will you stop or will you just keep goin', please don't say no." Overall, the song seems to be about the fear and thrill of falling in love, and the uncertainty of where those feelings will take you.
